I like your -- TrouserGate -- much better than SockGate. Some folks are referring to it as SockGate. TrouserGate sounds better.

You know I don't care if the US services took him out or he dies of natural causes, as long as he is dead.

I don't care how he died either, but I would like to see it proven. And, I would not be horribly bothered if he died in a hole praying to his god as the U.S Military rained justice down upon him. That would not bother me much either.

there were delays in service of about an hour.

They really ought to revise that. My one hour trip took me two and a half hours tonight. Penn Station was stacked with wall to wall people waiting for delayed trains (no air conditioning). Heaven forbid they had to evacuate tonight.

NOTE: THE FOLLOWING TEXT IS AN EXACT QUOTE:

http://travel.state.gov/travel/iraq_warning.html

IRAQ

July 20, 2004

This Travel Warning updates information on the continuing dangerous security situation in Iraq following the transfer of governing authority to the Interim Iraqi Government on June 28, 2004. The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad was established on the same day. The security threat to all American citizens in Iraq remains extremely high, with a high risk of attacks on civilians. International organizations have reduced their staff in Iraq as a result of attacks, bombings and threats to civil aviation. This supersedes the Travel Warning of June 25, 2004.

The Department of State continues to strongly warn U.S. citizens against travel to Iraq, which remains very dangerous. Remnants of the former Baath regime, transnational terrorists, and criminal elements remain active. Attacks against military and civilian targets throughout Iraq continue. Targets include hotels, restaurants, police stations, checkpoints, foreign diplomatic missions, and international organizations and other locations with expatriate personnel. These attacks have resulted in deaths and injuries of American citizens, including those doing humanitarian work. There is credible information that terrorists have targeted civil aviation. In addition, there have been planned and random killings, as well as extortions and kidnappings. Military operations continue. There are daily attacks against Multinational Forces - Iraq (MNF-I) throughout the country.

All vehicular travel in Iraq is extremely dangerous. There have been numerous attacks on civilian vehicles, as well as military convoys. Attacks occur throughout the day, but travel at night is exceptionally dangerous. Travel in or through Ramadi and Fallujah, travel between al-Hillah and Baghdad, and travel between the International Zone and Baghdad International Airport is particularly dangerous. Occasionally, U.S. Government personnel are prohibited from traveling to select areas depending on prevailing security conditions. There continues to be heavy use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) and/or mines on roads, particularly in plastic bags, soda cans, and dead animals. Grenades and explosives have been thrown into vehicles from overpasses, particularly in crowded areas. Travel should be undertaken only when absolutely necessary and with the appropriate security.

The U.S. Embassy is located in the International Zone. The Embassy can provide only limited emergency services to U.S. citizens in Iraq. At present travel to and from the International Zone is extremely limited. The U.S. Embassy does not provide visa services. American citizens who choose to visit or reside in Iraq despite this Travel Warning are urged to pay close attention to their personal security, avoid crowds, especially rallies or demonstrations and to inform the U.S. Embassy of their presence in Iraq.

American citizens may obtain the latest security information or other information about Iraq by calling the U.S. Embassy, located in the International Zone, at: 1-240-553-0584, or by e-mail: usconsulbaghdad@state.gov or via the U.S. Embassy's website: http//iraq.usembassy.gov. Their after hours number is 1-914-822-5473.
Updated information on travel and security in Iraq may be obtained from the Department of State by calling 1-888-407-4747 within the United States, or, from overseas, 1-317-472-2328. For further information, please consult the Consular Information Sheet for Iraq, the current Worldwide Caution and the Middle East and North Africa Public Announcement, all of which are available on the Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet website at http://travel.state.gov.

The Washington Post

WASHINGTON — The percentage of Americans who have created an emergency plan for a terrorist attack has dropped in the last year, along with the proportion of Americans who believe terrorists may strike near their home or workplace, according to two new studies released Tuesday.

Civil preparedness experts said these and other are going in precisely the wrong direction, with U.S. authorities warning that al-Qaida is determined to strike the United States this summer or fall. The marketing information was released at a conference Tuesday at George Washington University.

“We need to narrow the universe of the unprepared, of those we need to worry about in a catastrophic situation, and it is not going to be easy,” Red Cross President Marsha Evans said in a speech Tuesday outlining her group’s survey on emergency preparedness. “Every one of those unprepared Americans is a potential barrier to the effectiveness of our response to any disaster.”

Eyewitness News Investigation: Part of New York's Border Left Wide Open?

By The Eyewitness News Investigators

(New York-WABC, July 20, 2004) — With the threat of a terror attack hanging over both political conventions, we have uncovered alarming security gaps. In some areas the border is wide open and unguarded. The New York State border with Canada stretches 500 miles. Anyone that crosses it, including a possible terrorist, can be in the tri-state area in just a few hours. Jim Hoffer is here with his exclusive report.

NYPD Confirms Subway Explosive Was Crude Bomb

By N.J. Burkett

(New York-WABC, July 20, 2004) — Just what caused the explosion at a Times Square subway stop? Eyewitness News' N.J. Burkett reports that a former police officer is part of the investigation as cops try to figure out what happened.

Sources have told Eyewitness News that police have identified a prime suspect -- a cop with a troubled past.

N.J. Burkett reports from Times Square.

The NYPD Commissioner has confirmed it was a crude homemade bomb that blew up in the subway station, sending hundreds into a panic at 8:00 on Monday night. Now, nearly 24 hours later, the motive remains a mystery.

Detectives spent much of the day searching for eyewitnesses, anyone who may have seen someone leave a pack back at the 43rd Street entrance to the Eighth Avenue subway.

Ray Kelly, NYC Police Commissioner: "It was black gunpowder, it was in a PVC pipe, it had b-bs inside the pipe."

Police say, it was an off-duty New York City transit patrolman who said he discovered the bomb, claiming it went off moments after he first noticed it.

Sources familiar with the investigation identified the officer as Joseph Rodriguez, a 4-year veteran of the department, whose last assignment was a transit division's Manhattan task force. NYPD officials would neither confirm nor deny that Rodriguez is a suspect in the investigation.

The bomb was found on a landing just inside of the subway entrance, where there are no surveillance cameras.

Tom Moutemarano, Witness: "I was in my third floor apartment in the Times Square Hotel, and it shook. And the boom was so loud that it could not be fireworks. That's how loud it was."

Witnesses say the explosion was terrifying. One of those was veteran TV talkshow host Joe Franklin.

N.J. Burkett: "What did it sound like to you, Joe?"

Joe Franklin, Television Personality: "It sounded to me like a bomb. I was hoping it was only a prank, that it was only a firecracker, but it sounded to me like a bomb. It sounded very scary. People were running out of restaurants. There's a school in this building, and a lot of mothers were running up, 'I want to get my kid out of the building.' They thought this was another 9/11, or another explosion. But happily, luckily, I think it was only something on the staircase. People were afraid it was something inside a subway car where people were being blown up and destroyed inside. Everybody was fearing the worst, people were trembling, they were shrieking, they were hysterical."

Officer Rodriguez was the only one hurt in the case, and he was treated at Bellevue Hospital for what were described as minor burns.

Let's make this perfectly clear, the NYPD will neither confirm nor deny that Rodriguez is a suspect in this case. However, Eyewitness News has learned that the FBI and the Joint Terrorism Taskforce are no longer investigating this case.
