The Catholic Church condemned anti-Zionism as a cover for anti-Semitism by means of a joint statement issued by a forum of Catholic-Jewish intellectuals this week.

The basic premise of this article is incorrect. Catholic doctrine and moral teachings are not defined by a "forum of Catholic-Jewish intellectuals."

I am Catholic and I am glad that this statement was put out. If JPII did not approve of it, it would not be stated.

It depends on who made the statement and on what grounds it was made.

Whatever its status, it is clearly a timely recognition of the facts on the ground and I applaud the Vatican for it.

It isn't doctrine, or a moral teaching -- not a religious statement.
