Billboards Urge Men Not To Have Sex With Minors

RICHMOND, Va. -- The state is posting billboards with messages such as "Isn't she a little young?" as part of a campaign to dissuade men from having sex with underage girls.

The campaign is aimed at reducing the number of young girls who have children with older men, the Virginia Department of Health said Monday.

In 1999 and 2000 in Virginia, men over 18 were responsible for 219 births involving girls who were 13 and 14, the department said.

Messages such as "Isn't she a little young?" and "Sex with a minor, don't go there" also appear on posters, coasters and napkins in bars, restaurants and stores in five cities.

"We encourage adult men to talk to their peers and discourage them from pursuing teenagers. What they are doing is unhealthy and against the law," said Robert Franklin, a health department official.

Cute idea. Why not throw a picture of Ted Kennedy up there next to a waterlogged Cadillac to really drive home the dangers of intergenerational hookups to young girls?

Why not just prosecute them for statutory rape? These billboards are an open admission that the state either can't or won't enforce its laws--a gilt-edged invitation for adult men to pursue teenage girls.

i heard this on the radio today, sounds a bit silly. good grief, someone hellbent on statutory rape is hardly likely to be dissuaded by a BILLBOARD!

And I thought anti-smoking billboards were dumb. (The only way one of those would make me quit smoking is to fall on me.)

Does anyone really think this will be any more effective than the saying "Fifteen will get you twenty?"

I guess that banishing-religion-from-the-public-square thingie has some unintended consequenses. Oh, well. I'm sure state sponsored billboards will be effective. Haven't state sponsored schools done a good job of instilling values in our young?
