Michigan Rally for President Bush - Live Thread
Posted on 05/03/2004 5:11:53 PM PDT by BigWaveBetty
Live tonight on C-Span at 8:30 eastern, rally for President Bush in Michigan.
I predict there'll be a live thread tonight on Free Republic.
Also, look for Freeper Hillary's Lovely Legs on stage with the president. She's sitting on the top row of the bleachers, stage left, wearing a fuchsia coat.

Thanks for the pings. Had computer troubles this evening so missed this on c-span(drats) and haven't read through this thread yet but will. I live in Michigan so this bus tour is pretty exciting stuff even though I'm 500+ miles away from where all the action was! I hope the support for the president today will be contageous.

I wasn't puting you down.
But Kerry came to Cleveland and the Democratic Base did not even know he was coming. I know for a fact that had Kerry even bothered to ask from help from the Teachers Union, Auto Workers , and Building Trade unions there would have been 4 or 5 thousand people to greet Kerry in Cleveland. There was NO ONE!! It would have made great pictures on local TV. It would have been easy to get Democratic volunteers .. but no one informed them or asked them.
Newspapers are not worth a warm pitcher of SPIT in an election. Don't worry about newspapers. Consider this:: Bush has spent 50 million on advertising so far... HOW MUCH of the 50 million was in Newspapers? The correct answer is ZERO DOLLARS. Kerry is spending 25 million in advertising next week. How much of that is in newspapers? The correct answer is ZERO DOLLARS.
Betcha the Bush and Kerry campaigns both know newspapers can't help get anyone elected... cause they can't. Think of it 75 million dollars spent and none of it in Newspapers.
The name of the game is TV and Radio, not newspapers. Newspapers have almost no influence in wining or losing elections.
It is the Bush professionals that make sure people know President Bush is coming. It was Kerrys un-professioals who did not contact any local people to get the ball rolling for him. Both sides have enthusiastic volunteers. It used to be that the Democrats were organized, and the Republicans were not. That is no longer true. It is the Kerry campaign that is not organized enough to make use of his base.
That was the point I was trying to make. Sorry if I offended you.

No, I am not offended. I just wanted to put the spotlight on the grassroots.
I agree about newspapers and the editors here know it; they complain all the time that they cannot get the 18-34 yr-old female demographic anymore. However, the local weeklies will take the editorial & the pics of the rally from the Tribune. Lee owns the weeklies, too. I know nothing of the local TV channels, as I rarely watch them. Word of mouth still counts for a lot out here.
The base is pumped for W and I don't see that enthusiasm on the Left. From my perspective, we Bush volunteers have generated and maintained our own enthusiasm. It is genuine.
I found your analysis of Kerry's campaign interesting and it rings true. I follow your essays on your site and I know you know communications and politics.

Instead of referring to the newspapers and the alphabet networks w/that old bromide, "the elite media", let's just call 'em what they are, "the old media."

...As I said, local media is half the game. With Fox, talk radio, and the Internet, Bush could end up with over half the media on his side. Kerry had best learn how to play local media, or he is toast.
Shhhhhhhhhhhh....wouldn't want to tip off the enemy! ;-)

I cancelled my subscription to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 4 years ago. After getting a daily paper, and sometimes two or three, for my entire life, I haven't missed it.
About a year ago, I moved into a 'burb' of St. Louis, and I get a "Free" weekly in the mail called "West Newsmagazine". I was amazed when I started to read it, in that it runs the columns of Thomas Sowell, Bill O'Reilly, and it's own editorial page has a definate conservative bent.
I was happy to see that somebody is trying to fill the obvious gap!

Thank you for the screen caps. I appreciate it.
You were just a little off when you enlarged the woman that you thought was me. I am at the very top of the screen, my head kind of cut off, and in front of me is a man in a suit and tie. To the left to me is a woman in a white coat standing on the bleacher.
I had a better seat earlier in the show, but I got up to talk to a friend and take Travis Tritt's picture and someone took my seat so I ended up in the nose bleed section.
It was freezing cold, and I mean bone chilling cold that reminded me of opening night in Olympic stadium. If it wasn't May I would have worn fur, and some women wore sandals. I don't know how they survived.
The speech was excellent and the crowd was huge. If someone said 10,000, that would be about right.
We had one heckler who started screaming "Bush Lied, you lied about the war". I don't know if they showed it on TV, but some old veterans took him down to the ground. It was fantastic.
I had a nice time and met some nice people. My section was mostly state senators and reps, and then a couple rows down were the US Congresspeople. I met some freepers who I gave tickets to, and await their impressions of the evening.

I saw the President, introduced by the First Lady, in Kalamazoo this afternoon. The Stadium probably holds about 8 thousand and I would guess there were more than 6 thousand. (But I am horrible at these guesses and of course I am being conservative.)
President Bush was great, though his appearance later in the evening looked a lot better orchestrated, much as I remember the 2000 events. The crowd was energized and there were lots of standing ovations. Word in Michigan is that Kerry is up 46-44 which I consider to be great news for the President in a state that has really been hard hit by job losses.

When Kerry came to Atlanta, he refused to talk to the local media. He had all the local media taken to a room and left them there. He went out and spoke with the national media and then left without speaking to the local media. Needless to say, the local coverage was not positive.
