Curmudgeons are the best, aren't they? Apparently they serve a useful purpose in the grand scheme of life.
Sort of like flies, mosquitoes, cockroaches, rats......

Nah. Curmudgeons are the ones that force us to be more social in the hopes that we won't turn out just like them. :-)

I never requested that they not index our archives. Thanks for that information, Jim. While we are on the subject, did google ever approach you and ask for money for their services? Not that it's any of my business, you understand...
I noted long ago that Washington (com)Post is a paying google customer, so there has always been a question in my mind whether they applied some pressure on google to limit hits on your forum.
But of course the problem could have nothing to do with google and instead be related to the way the FR database is set up - John was making a lot of changes back then to deal with the increasing traffic FR was getting. There are many websites that are just unsearchable - the official California State website, for instance.
Regardless, I just want to impress upon you that the ability to go back through the archives and dig out what some liberal said two years ago was one of the great things about your forum. I miss it terribly.

Gosh, all this waiting for October 18 - I expected to hear about Night and Fog decrees, whackings, Harvey Keitel showing up as the cleaner, ready to dump acid over evidence and bodies.....
To: tpaine
Sure.
The more people involved, the more likely there is going to be someone involved who decides to use the system for their own purposes. Joe is a great example. He was given access, and he abused it, and he has lied about it, and he has caused harm.
You say he predicted it. But you know what? If I tell someone that if they do something, they are going to die, and then they do it and I go and shoot them, then I would not be the Amazing Kreshkin.

It's complicated. Someday. It's on my wish list (as are about a million other things).Yeah, I know what you mean.
The other crazy idea that I had was to make forum selection (one or more) an option on the article posting page. Kind of like picking "topics", but ONLY the Sidebar or Admin Moderators could alter the selection after the article was posted.
The "topics" available for selection would then become a combination of the fixed options that are now available in the different forums. And "keywords" would remain user defined, as it is now.
It's not real high on my personal wish list. It's just that sometimes ideas pop into my head, trying to think of a way to make the General Interest, Religion or other forums a little more visible for some users, but invisible for others who don't want to see them.
Thanks for listening!

It is amazing how seriously people who moderate a freaking message board take themself so seriously. Go outside....

What's even more amazing is how people who post on a message board take what the moderators do so seriously.

Leni, thank you for speaking out on what has happened on many of the Terri Schiavo threads. I have also stopped posting except for prayers for Terri & her family.
Jim, I wish more had used the 'abuse' button on those threads. Personal attacks and threats of violence should not become acceptable on FR.
Luis, you are correct the best way to honor Terri is to change Florida laws so that never again is an innocent disabled person given a judicial death sentence.

In April of 2,002 I received an e-mail from JR stating that he was going to assert his belief that we should only elect Republicans in order to get conservative court appointments. I answer that it was fine for him to take that position, but that if he tried to force the Forum that direction it would be a disaster.

How much of this "dispute" boils down to the fact that some conservatives are anti-Republican and get angry at those who assert that the only electable alternative to a Democrat is a Republican?
I think it's the heart of the issue.

My point, which you seem unable to grasp, is that the problem isn't new.
You made your point at 549.. -- I countered that point.
Now you claim I "can't grasp" your REAL point? -- Give it up.. You're simply arguing for arguments sake.

In the interest of screenname purity, it's
Deb, not
Deb.
It took me about a year to remember how to spell f-u-c-h-s-i-a.

I've had better results with alltheweb.com or hotbot.com for domain-specific searches like FR-- although google does at times provide good results.
I would still like to find a few other search engines which can be restricted to search one website, just in case the others get changed.
