My daughter is currently working on one for us that is a house that looks like ours in shape, roof pitch and placement of the windows in the front. She is trying to figure out a way to make the walls look like stone (our house is stone), instead of painted wood like the picture that came with the pattern. When finished and framed, it will occupy a prominent place downstairs.

My grandmother was a wonderful crochet and knit artisan and I could not have cared less when I was a kid. I ended up teaching myself when I became old enough to appreciate her designs, since she was already gone. My loss. I taught my son, at his request, how to do a chain stitch so of course, he made a whip...sigh...boys...

my gram taught me to do embroidery (i did many a stamped pillow case) and knitting and crocheting. i will never need to make an afghan, bc we have the lithuanian grandma's afghans and xshub's dago grandma's output as well. we are well stocked on afghans!

To this day jax's favorite 'blankie" is the afghan I made while I was pregnant.

I drove my friends and business associates nuts with my crocheting - I never left home without it. I would be attending a political fundraiser and there I was with my crocheting in my lap - I wasn't drinking and those things are so booooooring!!!!!!!!!

that sounds gorgeous! if she is able to modify the pattern, that is extremely impressive!

The thing I love about crochet is that once you have worked on the pattern for a few days, you can count the stitches by touch. I like to crochet in the evenings while sitting outdoors, or watching TV. I am about 3/4 of the way finished with this afghan, which means if I really bust ass, it will be on our bed in time for cold weather.

I hope to get back into doing it this winter - at the rate I'm going one project I started ages ago will probably not be finished until Jax makes me a grandmother!!!

My grandmother did crocheting, knitting and needlepoint...I could never get the hang of knitting.

Growing up I lived on the same block as the grammar school and convent. One of the nuns invited a group of the girls from the block to learn to crochet. I remember going to the convent 2x a week for those lessons - I just loved doing it.

As a thank you sister came to our house for dinner every other week and my mother would do her hair for her!!!

My daughter asked me to show her how to do cross stitch at age seven, after seeing her teacher doing one on her break. I took her to the craft store, bought her a couple of simple kits, and by the time she was 12, she was doing the really complicated stuff that I can't do. Our house is full of her cross stitch and ribbon embroidery, even one of the bathrooms.

I've had to make all my afghans because when I moved to Delaware, my mother wouldn't let me take any of the ones my grandmother had made for me over the years.

That's the bad thing about working with yarn. The time of year when it's most comfortable to make things is when you wish they were already done! :-) Now I'm really going...

I used to crochet. USAF doctor prescribed it to teach me how to control my stress induced HBP at 20 years of age. After about 5 afghans which took me about 2 days (embellishing on the time) I learned how to focus when I was getting angry and keep the old BP in check. I no longer crochet because I can focus without it.
