The Hobbit Hole IV – The Road Goes Ever On…

Posted on 08/04/2003 9:43:18 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

The Road Goes Ever On…

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Speechless...

MBY: Yes, very cool post. One of the saddest stones I carry in my knapsack is that now none of my kids (that I may ultimately have) will know my Mom, nor my grandparents, nor they them. It's just not right, but it's how things are.

Ramius. After the life I had with my Grama, you made me cry with that.

I'd have never made it without Grama and Pepaw. They were the most important people in my life.

But, there is hope, because the reason my grandparents were so pivotal for me is that I have parents that didn't parent. They provided and taught some things but not the real things. And, the thing is, you can make the decision to be what your children need. They grow up really fast. I hope you get a chance to raise kids. It's worth it all.

except for short periods of time when you wanna kill 'em - where I'm at right now.

Such a touching post about you're granddaughter. I loved it. I don't think she was too young at all. And she probably really needed that kind of lap time with you.

For me it was my great-grandmother. She had a small apartment attached to my grandparents house. She had it filled with the most fascinating things. It was like walking into Bilbo's house, you know? She wrote music, she painted, she wrote stories. At the age of 75 she had a display of her paintings up at the Witte Museum, there in San Antonio. She belonged to an order of Fransciscan nuns, after she became a widow. And, she was my sponsor for confirmation in the Catholic Church. I still think of her ever day, and I ask for her guidance. She was something else.

WOW, MBY that is fantastic! I too was close to great-grandparents. I spent much time with Grama's mom and until I was 10 much time with Pepaw's mom. Grama's mom was a very big part of my life because she lived until I was 18 and only lived 8 miles from us at Grama's house. She is the one who taught me plants. I might be more like her than anyone in the family.

And as far as Abby goes, you know, all that lap time was equally good for me. And I thought about it after I posted that to you. You know her praying for salvation is really the one good thing that has happened to me this summer.

Roger that... :-)

For me it's also that they were such remarkable people, I just don't think I can do them justice.

Well, don't underestimate their influence that your sister carries on, I am sure. She will likely make up for the loss a great deal. :)

I'm choking up here. Going to go make dinner and watch some Boromir bashing orcs.

Remember, it was they that taught you the skills you need. If they were remarkable, so will you be. It's all about priorities.

Most of the time it almost requires some hint of interest on the girls' part to get us over the hurdle. Even a smile or some eye contact, but better yet some idle chitchat...

There you go, Rosie! That's what you were thinking of doing anyway!!

LOL Suzi - sounds like a bad commercial but you're too right there. Lots of things too big for us, so it's time to call in the artillery...

Ugh, now tomorrow is Tuesday and I'm at the client site, which is No Fun at All. Wish it were Friday... did I mention I'm going to Canada and drinking wine this weekend?

Yeah, you mentioned Canada and wine! Hope you have a lot of fun. Be safe. It's close enough to time that it would be all right to count the hours.
