The Hobbit Hole IV – The Road Goes Ever On…
Posted on 08/04/2003 9:43:18 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
The Road Goes Ever On
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

I think it would be fun to try.... and you would soon figure out if you like raising pigs!
My friends found pigs to be worth doing for a couple years, but they tired of it.... Once you have them, the work never stops. Having farm animals is a lifestyle, not just a hobby. Those friends are where I learned that feeding them scraps and slop makes them MUCH messier, wherease the pig chow was tidy (they had a feeder that would hold a 40 pound bag of pellets at a time, cleanly, and made for more uniform and less stinky waste. Something to consider.
They also said that keeping pigs was slightly more economical than a steer, pound for pound, because of their short cycle and the relative price of pork I guess.
I thought about going in halvies on a steer when I first moved here.... but even one steer is ten times more mess than a horse. (and, as it turns out, I wouldn't have the pasture to support it, so I would have to feed it alot-killing any cost benefit) They poop where they eat. The horses are cleaner.

Now, i know a doctor that "grass raises" his chickens. He has these pens that he moves around his pastures. The don't get an abundance of exercise, but they are right tender, get plenty of sunshine and natural food ...

"range raising" i think is the proper term ..

Good morning! Only 8 and a half hours to go...

Sorry...I'm "not real with it" this a.m.(again). Muti-tasking..trying walk and chew gum at the same time.
Got a map and looking at New Mexico....O.K. Los Alamos is near Santa Fe, actually Roswell is about 200 miles south of the Los Alamos area. Los Alamos could also be rather interesting if the "black helicopters" and the Feds don't pick us up.
Again it is going to have to be timing. Terry is crazy enough to drive down to Roswell for Flat Frodo to do a photo shot, and so am I.
