The Hobbit Hole IV – The Road Goes Ever On…
Posted on 08/04/2003 9:43:18 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
The Road Goes Ever On
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

I don't think it's that far...my husband had mentioned "The Little Alien Inn" (Sp???) It would be a rather short call, but maybe we could put a couple of vacation days with it and do a "shoot" in Roswell. (why did I make all those alien jokes) Actually considering that bunch that make that place a tourist attraction, FF prob. would go unnoticed, he'd fit right in....anyway ya'll pray.
Speaking of prayer for today...thanks.

It would be cheaper to buy bacon for a lifetime.I imagine it would...but that's not why I want to raise my own. I want to, because I want to know what my meat has in it, so to speak...and as a bonus that it was humanely treated.
Call me silly, but that matters to me. And although I still go down to Walmart and pick up my Tyson chicken and livers...I wish I didn't have to and don't think I'd mind the extra effort (and perhaps expense) to bring what I would hope to be a more nutritious and honorable meal to the table.
Like I say, people might think I'm silly (I know alot of people here on FR would think so)...but there it is.

I don't think you're silly at all. More power to you! I'm unable to raise my meat, so I purchase it at local butcher shops where I can find out how the meat was raised, and what it was raised on. It's more expensive, but it's worth it.

It's the simplest and best when raising a few animals, I am sure.... I think the trouble came when we moved to cities that had to be supplied from factory farms. It isn't natural to raise thousands of animals of any kind in even what started out as a nice facility.

It isn't natural to raise thousands of animals of any kind in even what started out as a nice facility. You said it all right there. The price is cheap...but at what cost? The nutritional value diminishes, because it's all about the bottom line. And more importantly to me, I feel we are obligated as Christians to be "Good Stewards" to the beasts that are put in our care. Now if you can be a good steward to 15 million chickens, more power to you...but I just don't think that is possible and still remain humane.

the other thing is that livestock that is not allowed to frolick and use their muscles are marketed as being more tender ..

I have heard that pasture-raised chickens do have a different meat texture...that store bought chicken is mushy in comparison...
but I don't know.
