The Hobbit Hole IV – The Road Goes Ever On…

Posted on 08/04/2003 9:43:18 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

The Road Goes Ever On…

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

I submit that a horse raised in a 10x10' pen for 6 months would stink too...and would try to get out!

No argument here. of course they would do less damage if they weren't confined to a small area.

But most people don't dedicate acres to be rooted by pigs.... It would be cheaper to buy bacon for a lifetime.

They are 'destructive' to the land they are in, and they don't graze, they root. They tear up ground completely and rather quickly. They would be excellent in a garden plot that you want to till.

Well, these pigs were definitely not the pastured pigs! They were the mudhole pen pigs.

Today is a debate over favourite cartoon characters. Ruthy goes for Daffy Duck Dodgers. I'm rooting for Snoopy :-)

If that was really all there is to it, that would be pretty disappointing!

I too tend to think there is more.

There you go! We're gardeners! We don't want to raise cows, just a couple of pigs...here, in this article it says:

Flexibility isn't the only advantage of pastured hogs, says Honeyman. Compared to confinement operations, pasture systems offer:

Lower initial capital investment.
Lower annual maintenance costs.
Healthier hogs, especially in regard to from respiratory diseases, rhinitis and foot and leg problems.
Lower (or no) heating. cooling and ventilation costs.
Fewer odor problems.
Similar gain and feed efficiency.
Similar sow reproductive health
Similar feed costs.

But, also know that with two horses on pasture of 4 acres, poop management is still a major part of my life. If I don't spread it, I have a major fly problem within days.

Well, this is true...I didn't say it wouldn't be work! But certainly better work than clearing out a little pen they are in all the time.

Now here is another thing...this guy in the article raises 45 pigs on 3 acres! To me that is appalling, even for pastured pigs! I just want the two! I'm thinking 2 acres for the two pigs, that I would rotate back and forth.

He plants clover on the side that is resting...we do that in our garden.

By "the same" I meant the Texas gulf coast. MBY got him in the further southern portions of it. I don't know if Alkhin is near Houston or on the gulf coast. Bear, I think, is doing the San Antonio area. As far as the other parts of the state, I guess we don't get out enough...only when we are driving Aimee' to and from school when car travel is needed.
Where is Burnet County? Is that the county where our beloved President's Western White House is located. We may could come up...it really depends on timing here. Thanks for the invite...it might work out.

Ya'll just work out times & I'll do my best.

Pasture-raised hogs, on the other hand, take longer to grow to market weight; however their welfare is improved by having access to pasture.

Pasture-fed pork products will also be much higher in vitamins A and D and will have a better lipid profile. The ideal ratio of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids is as close to 1:1 as possible. Intensively raised pork has a 20:1 ratio, pasture-fed approaches 3:1. An overabundance of omega-6 in the diet can be deleterious which is why diet dictocrats are always saying to supplement omega-3s. Ergo, pasture-fed is the only way to go. (same goes with yer chickens)

Funny how the simplest approach is the healthiest.
