Word For The Day, Monday, July 28, 2003: Fugacious
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
quietus \kwye-EE-tus\ noun
1. final settlement (as of a debt)
2. removal from activity; especially death *
3. something that quiets or represses
*Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.
Example sentence: "This book is also about the death of Lavrenti Pavlovich Beria, a quietus that for reasons not satisfactorily explained has been placed a year later than it actually occurred." (Ruth Rendell, _The New York Times Book Review_, April 6, 1986)
Did you know?
In the early 1500s, English speakers adopted the Medieval Latin phrase "quietus est" (literally "he is quit") as the name for the writ of discharge exempting a baron or knight from payment of a knight's fee to the king. The expression was later shortened to "quietus" and applied to the termination of any debt. William Shakespeare was the first to use "quietus" as a metaphor for the termination of life: "For who would bear the whips and scorns of time, ...When he himself might his quietus make / With a bare bodkin?" (_Hamlet_). The third meaning, which is more influenced by "quiet" than "quit," appeared in the 19th century. It sometimes occurs in the phrase "put the quietus on" (as in, "The bad news put the quietus on their celebration").

I'm like you - I go out as rarely as possible. I actually look forward to going to the grocery store because they have AC!!! Because my car doesn't!!!
Dry heat or not - those are scary temps you're talking about there my friend. But I will admit - I am sticky all the time. The only saving grace is the breeze and it is nearly constant.

Well, I've been told that my hose is pretty cool...
To: Slip18
The water in my hose is too hot. Do you have a cold hose? For the first 10 or 15 minutes of running it the water in the hose is HOT. After that it is WAAAAAAAAY too cold for me to deal with.

That is because the sun heats the hose and its contents. While 15 minutes would indicate a very long hose or low water pressure, the water is cooler once the hoses contents are expelled. So a hot hose would have hot contents until... Somebody help me out with this fluid mech and thermal dynamics stuff. Is Robert in class today?

We started the monsoon season on July 18. So the humidity is way up. Sticky is a good word for it. I've been trying to do something with my new garden that was finished last week. It's too hot to even put in new soil. It will all just dry out and blow away. Kind of like your painting of Jax's bedroom walls, eh?

It isn't just the heated water in the hose.... then there's the water sitting in the pipes up in the 130+ degree attic...
We don't bother turning on the hot water faucet until at least 30 minutes after sunset.

Juggy Vanessa???? Please say you meant Juggy Vanessa...
To: Slip18
Hmmmm...your concept of comments sans dirtiness...I find it intriguing...may have to try it someday
To: Flurry; Gabz
Flurry, honey, the cold water is hot here in the summer. Instead of a water heater, we need a water cooler for three months. Hmmmm, maybe I've come up with an invention.

Do you have cold water in Canada? Better yet, will you mail be a big old ice cube? I've used all of mine for my bath.

That should only impact the hot water. An outdoor hose shouldn't pass through attic.

Gabz doesn't live in ArridZona. Out there it does rain but evaporates before it hits the ground.

We've got cold women, you can have all of those you want. We normally have cold water, just not around here, it's been hot here too for weeks. My apartment's like a steam bath, which I hope won't interfere with my regular annual bath due any day now.
