Word For The Day, Monday, July 28, 2003: Fugacious

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

quietus \kwye-EE-tus\ noun
1. final settlement (as of a debt)
2. removal from activity; especially death *
3. something that quiets or represses

*Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence: "This book is also about the death of Lavrenti Pavlovich Beria, a quietus that for reasons not satisfactorily explained has been placed a year later than it actually occurred." (Ruth Rendell, _The New York Times Book Review_, April 6, 1986)

Did you know?
In the early 1500s, English speakers adopted the Medieval Latin phrase "quietus est" (literally "he is quit") as the name for the writ of discharge exempting a baron or knight from payment of a knight's fee to the king. The expression was later shortened to "quietus" and applied to the termination of any debt. William Shakespeare was the first to use "quietus" as a metaphor for the termination of life: "For who would bear the whips and scorns of time, ...When he himself might his quietus make / With a bare bodkin?" (_Hamlet_). The third meaning, which is more influenced by "quiet" than "quit," appeared in the 19th century. It sometimes occurs in the phrase "put the quietus on" (as in, "The bad news put the quietus on their celebration").

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The high pressure over our home is keeping the monsoon quietus here. No rain. No nothing. It's hotter than hades.

Do you all realize this July has been the hottest July since 1896? And Arizona gets the prize.

May I borrow the grade book to give you a grade, xs? "Quietus after coitus" is brilliant. I think you deserve a couple of +'s after your A.

Yes, we have survived the summer of 2003! It was hot.

The other day I was getting ready to take a bath, and put the water temperature at its coolest point. The cold water came out at over 100 degrees. I had to put ice cubes in my bath water. Of course, that day it was a mere 117 outside.

But enough complaining. It's absolutely gorgeous here for nine months of the year. And two months of the three miserable months are gone.

Cyber has been wonderful at comforting me . . .

ACK - it's only 95 here and the idea of anyone touching me just doesn't exist.

LOL! Heck, I barely go outside except for getting groceries and stuff. After shopping, you get in your car and I swear the car is over 140 inside. It takes your breath away.

Cyber can take any serious moment and turn it into a silly moment. He just makes fun of my complaints, and makes me laugh it off.

So it's a chilly 95 in your neck of the woods? Better get started building those igloos.

You know Cyber lurks FR, and you're trying to get me to hose Slippy. Geeze!

[Now, if Slippy requests to be hosed, that's another matter....]

I know there's something dirty in there. I know it! Maybe it's cuz it's Monday, but I can't find it. Oh well - distracting me from my real purpose anyway...
