Word For The Day, Monday, July 28, 2003: Fugacious

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

quietus \kwye-EE-tus\ noun
1. final settlement (as of a debt)
2. removal from activity; especially death *
3. something that quiets or represses

*Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence: "This book is also about the death of Lavrenti Pavlovich Beria, a quietus that for reasons not satisfactorily explained has been placed a year later than it actually occurred." (Ruth Rendell, _The New York Times Book Review_, April 6, 1986)

Did you know?
In the early 1500s, English speakers adopted the Medieval Latin phrase "quietus est" (literally "he is quit") as the name for the writ of discharge exempting a baron or knight from payment of a knight's fee to the king. The expression was later shortened to "quietus" and applied to the termination of any debt. William Shakespeare was the first to use "quietus" as a metaphor for the termination of life: "For who would bear the whips and scorns of time, ...When he himself might his quietus make / With a bare bodkin?" (_Hamlet_). The third meaning, which is more influenced by "quiet" than "quit," appeared in the 19th century. It sometimes occurs in the phrase "put the quietus on" (as in, "The bad news put the quietus on their celebration").

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

I don't follow liberal mainstream media much anymore, but I gather the onslaught with respect to this issue has been ferocious.

Every time I think that I'm the only one who's sane-ly
Someone posts to me
And every now and then I spend my time at rhyme and verse
And curse those liberal fiends

And then along comes Flurry
And does he want to give me bucks and ride my pickup truck
And give me pick of martinis
Or maybe rather gather vids of all the wild coquette sleepovers
No one ever sees

When we met I was sure out of touch
Now my fellow croq’s posting all this stuff

When vague desire is the fire in the eyes of chicks
Who go swimming in the beer vat
And when the xsmommy posts the other folks make jokes
At her poor doggie’s trimmed off “fat”

And then along comes Flurry
And does he want to set 'em free and let 'em see the real puppy
From where he really came
And will they struggle much when told that such an ugly mutt was his
Will make them not the same

When we met I was sure out of touch
Now my fellow croq’s posting all this stuff

And when the daily word is given us
The gassed and flaccid kids are flung across the stairs
The psychodrama's and the trauma's gone
The songs are left unsung and no one really cares

And then along comes Flurry
And does he want to see the stains, the videos of all the games
He made the night before
Or will his reddened eyes reflect the lies and make him realize
His urgent cry for beer no more

When we met I was sure out of touch
Now my fellow croq’s posting all this stuff
all kinds of stuff all kinds of stuff
all kinds of stuff all kinds of stuff

In her weekly MSNBC.com column on Friday, Clift offered a less accusatory version of the same theme, arguing that finding the weapons of mass destruction “would be such a huge win for the administration that you would think they would have gone to greater lengths to take Uday and Qusay alive.”

Apparently the man that convinced Brokaw, does not convince Eleanor...

Tom Brokaw: Somewhere in here is our smoking gun?
David Kay: Tom, I’m sure somewhere in here are guidance to what is going to lead us to unwrapping the Iraqi weapon of mass destruction program. Documents and the exploitation of those documents is one of the keys.
Brokaw: Are you going to be able to find something that the American people will say “Aha, they were telling us the truth all the time. There it is. I get it.” Or will you have to do an analysis for them, and show them documentation, get testimony, but come short when it comes to saying ‘here it is?’
Kay: Well, if I knew what we were going to find, I wouldn’t be here this long already. But I can tell you what we’re looking for: we’re looking for documentary evidence. We’re looking for equipment, analytical results, sample results. We’re looking for testimony of Iraqis who were actually involved in the weapons program. I’m confident that we will get all three of those and be able to explain exactly what the nuclear, biological and chemical program was of Saddam Hussein. I don’t know what the truth is yet. But we’ve got a process that will get us there.
Brokaw: But there’s no doubt in your mind, I gather, that in fact there was a program and it was substantial.
Kay: I’ve already seen enough to convince me, but that’s not the standard. I’ve got to have enough evidence to convince everyone of that. And that’s why we’re going through this process.

Apparently Chief Inspector David Kay, and his convincing of Tom Brokaw, hardly a VRWC member, was lost on Eleanor.
