Live worm found in man's brain during surgery

A live nine-centimetre-long worm has been found inside a man's brain during surgery in China.

The 42-year-old man from Luoding is said to have recently developed a mental disorder.

Medical experts suspect the man had the worm because of his habit of eating snakes and frogs, says the South China Morning Post.

Which came first? The mental disorder, or his habit of eating snakes and frogs?

Some anatomy expert or medical person here at FR explain to me how a WORM gets into the BRAIN from ingesting a frog or snake???

When my cousin was in med school, we'd often have dinner with her and her med school friends.

I will never forget the time we had dinner during their parasitology semester. There are some really, truly, ghastly parasites -- of which this would appear to be one. They often like to be near blood vessels, and the brain is a pretty good place for a worm to set up shop.... (Hint: don't be eating spaghetti when a med student begins describing worms.)

Pink Floyd -- The Wall comes to mind, appropriate for China?

"hey you"

The wall was too high, as you can see.
No matter how he tried he could not break free.
And the worms ate into his brain.

The worms crawl in. The worms crawl out. In your stomach and out your mouth...

People back then would get worms that would crawl around inside your body and come out of your eye. I can't remember the type of worm it was, though.

You're probably thinking of the Guinea Worm. It's still endemic in parts of Africa. It used to be in China, India, and, I believe, even in the Western hemisphere. It can come out of your body anywhere, though it seems to favor the lower extremities. The caduceus of the medical profession is actually a depiction of Guinea worms being slowly wound out of people on sticks after they first emerge from the skin. I posted a description of it in some thread. Let me look. Nope, I can't find it. I have it saved on another computer. I'll post the relevant portions later.

Legend has it that a particular member of the Earwig family , (a wormlike insect. check out the picture below), would be placed in an enemy's ear. The worm would then travel to the eardrum and would then begin to eat its way trough the brain until it emerged from the other ear! Quite an excruciating experience, especially if the earwig turned around and retraced its passage!

They are considered garden pests and you can read up on them at

EARWIG!

There is a Twilight Zone or Hitchcock Presents along those lines with the Earwig eating through to the other side of some guys head, which the man survives. The end of the show has the Doctor giving the poor guy some more bad news: it was a female...and it layed eggs.
