The Earth and Moon from Mars
Credit: MSSS, JPL, NASA

Explanation: What does Earth look like from Mars? The first image of Earth from the red planet was captured earlier this month by the camera onboard the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft currently orbiting Mars. Features visible on Earth include the Pacific Ocean, clouds, much of South America, and part of North America. Earth's Moon is visible on the upper right, with the crater Tycho brightening the lower part. Previously, Earth has been imaged from the Moon and spacecraft across the Solar System.

If you're interested, the Japanese NOZOMI mission to Mars is still on. They launched in 1998 but had a communications breakdown.

Nozomi was originally supposed to enter orbit around Mars on 11 October 1999. However, the spacecraft used more propellant than originally planned in an Earth swingby maneuver on 21 December 1998 . This left the spacecraft with insufficient acceleration to complete its nominal trajectory to Mars. A new trajectory was implemented whereby Nozomi will remain in heliocentric orbit for an additional four years and then reach Mars in December 2003.

Consider it done.

By the way, I will be on vacation June 2-9.

I may have a substitute APOD poster lined up, but that's still uncertain.

Thanks for visiting APOD!

I knew the MGS image would make APOD pretty soon. It's thought-provoking.
