Should I move to TX (Instead of AZ??)

Posted on 05/11/2003 3:54:40 PM PDT by 1stFreedom

I'm thinking about packing up from NY and moving out to Texas. But before I consider moving out there, I want to make sure I'm not moving to another Kalifornia or New York.

What is the political climate like? Is it conservative? Republican?

What are the philosophical undertones of the population? Conservative? Liberal?

How about the faith of the population? Is there a large Catholic [faituful] population?

How are the gun laws? Open carry?

Income tax? Corporate Tax?

Is the State homeschool friendly?

How organized are Freepers out there?

What is the best place to find employment for IT workers?

What is the best place to move to avoid allergies?

Is the state moving towards the left?

Is it as dry as Arizona?

I have lived in Dallas, College Station, and Houston, but I have visited San Antonio for work often enough and for long enough to know that there is something special about the town.

I never thought I would enjoy living in the Houston area, but I do. In fact, I would rather live here than in Dallas or College Station. I figure I will end up living in San Antonio sooner or later.

Yeah, but is your street as pet friendly as my street? Plenty of capacity to handle traffic, public art, and careful landscaping and individualized paint that shows residents take pride in their community.

Think of tumbleweeds as performance art. Variety is the spice of life, no?

I'm still fairly new to Texas. I always thought I wanted to live in Texas growing up in California as a kid. Now that I'm here - it takes a bit of getting use to. And that's with 20+ yrs in-between living in WA state. I'm in Austin and I've been told that this area is not a true reflection of Texans.

Things I like:
weather (even the humidity), thunderstorms (ok, that's weather too, but they are something else!), gas is cheap, food isn't bad at all...I was pleasantly surprised at the cost of a box of ceral, sales at Dillards (so if you live by one now, that's a wash), interesting places to hike, the Alamo (I like San Antonio, but don't want to live there...I don't think).

Things I dislike:
(Putting flame suit on)
The drivers are rude, the roads are beat up, garbage is all over the roads, parking lots, etc. I haven't seen such garbarge mess since the 70's in Cali.

Austin area had 23000 people laid off in 2002. Don't know how many so far in '03 (according to local talk radio), however more houses than ever are for sale (again according to radio KLBJ), so home prices are dropping a bit. It seems to me that 'real' Texans are friendly...but those not born to the state but lived here for 20 yrs or whatever are just regular.

But this is where the job is so this is where I'll stay. Good Luck!!

Basically, they just screw up the area that the locals have been happy with for the last 300 years.

Thank you for saying that.

Well, the street is indeed admirably wide, as are the major arterial streets where I live. That is one commonality. Are there any others? Actually not. LOL. Great pic. Thanks.

Those enormous tree roaches are the only thing my sister in law, a native New Yorker, was really freaked out about when her family moved here. It sure is a frightful thing when they fly at you.

Yes, even our cockroaches are bigger in Texas than anywhere else.

The saving factor to Texas' hot summers is in the evening there is always a nice wind to cool things down.

Huh? Not in my part of Texas there wasn't.....lol

I'm thinking of moving to Texas, but first - a question: do they have a ball club that's ever won the World Series?

Yes, even our cockroaches are bigger in Texas than anywhere else.

And dont forget the chiggers, fire ants, cricket and grasshopper infestations, not to mention tornadoes, floods and black mold.

...a native New Yorker...

NYC? I have a friend who lives in the East Village. Go into the apartment, and the roach will take your jacket and hang it up.

Stay clean away from New Mexico and Arizona! They are both governed by unreconstructed, socialist RATS. Just think, the gov of NM is none other than one of the Felon's main supporters who tried to give a Monica a job at the UN. His tainted name is Elliott Richardson.

In AZ, the gov is a female RAT named Napolitano but often called "The Godmother" She is trashing the state big time. She is paving the way for illegals from Mexico to easily stream into the state and all the other states too. Texas is the place for you. The best rule of all is to stay away from any Blue state, CA being the worst and WA a close second.

If your looking for an IT job in Texas, well, look elsewhere.....most have left Texas, because the market has been flooded due to the demise of Compaq and Enron....

I am an IT Specialist, and I am lucky to even have a job,but I was out of work for the last year, and when I was hired, it was for about 1/2 of my former salary.

Better try California, that is where most are headed.

Hell In Texas

The Devil in Hell we're told was chained,
And a thousand years he there remained,
He neither complained nor did he groan,
But determined to start a hell of his own,

Where he could torment the souls of men,
Without being chained in a prison pen,
So he asked the Lord if he had on hand
Anything left when he made this land.

The Lord said, "Yes, I have plenty on hand,
But I left it down on the Rio Grande;
The fact is 'old boy' the stuff is so poor
I don't think you can use it in hell any more."

But the Devil went down to look at the truck
And said if he took it as a gift he was stuck,
For after examining it carefully and well,
He concluded the place was too dry for a hell.

So in order to get it off His hand
The Lord promised the Devil to water the land,
For He had some water or rather some dregs,
A regular cathartic and smelled like bad eggs.

Hence the trade was closed and the deed was given,
And the Lord went back to His home in Heaven;
The Devil said to himself, "I have all that is needed,
To make a good hell" and hence he succeeded.

He began to put thorns all over the trees,
And he mixed up the sands with millions of fleas,
He scattered tarantulas along the roads;
Put thorns on cactus and horns on toads.

He lengthened the horns of the Texas steers,
Put an addition to the rabbits ears;
He put a little devil in the broncho steed
And poisoned the feet of the centipede.

The rattlesnake bites you, the scorpion stings,
The mosquito delights you with his buzzing wings,
The sand-burs prevail and so do the ants
And those who sit down need half soles on their pants.

The Devil then said that throughout the land
He'd arrange to keep the Devil's own brand,
And all should be mavericks unless they bore,
Marks or scratches of bites and thorns by the score.

The heat in summer is one hundred and ten,
Too hot for the Devil and too hot for men;
The wild boar roams through the black chaparral;
'Tis a hell of a place that he has for a hell.

THE RED PEPPER GROWS BY THE BANK OF THE BROOK,
THE MEXICANS USE IT IN ALL THAT THEY COOK.
JUST DINE WITH A GREASER AND THEN YOU WILL SHOUT,
"I'VE A HELL ON THE INSIDE AS WELL AS WITHOUT."

Start your own company. Should have read Rich Dad, Poor Dad years ago. As it is, I am just going to finish up my 5-10 years at the corporate job and move on...BUT I have started my own company and have begun generating revenue.

Best thing I ever did though was to decide on where I wanted to live and made the work happen. Been more successful than ever. DON'T follow the work, follow your dreams first.
