Drudge Sirens: TEARS ON TV: DIXIE CHICKS EXPLAIN BUSH BASHING
Drudge Report ^ | 3/24/03 | Drudge

Posted on 04/23/2003 10:43:48 AM PDT by Pro-Bush

In a candid and emotional exclusive interview, Diane Sawyer talks with the Dixie Chicks -- Natalie Maines, Emily Robison and Martie Maguire -- who finally speak out about controversial comments regarding President Bush and the war with Iraq, made last month overseas -- during a London concert.

MORE The on-stage remarks, which many say were unpatriotic, have resulted in a flood of criticism and a backlash that has included a boycott of their music.

The interview will air on “PRIMETIME THURSDAY," THURSDAY, APRIL 24 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network, but the DRUDGE REPORT can now reveal some highlights:

MORE

NATALIE MAINES ON WHETHER SHE IS TRULY SORRY FOR HER ON-STAGE COMMENT ABOUT PRESIDENT BUSH:

MAINES: I think it came down to, it was ... that it was in a foreign country and it was that it was an off-the-cuff statement…And I think the way I said it was disrespectful. The wording I used, the way I said it, that was disrespectful…

DIANE SAWYER: …I hear something not quite ... what? Whole-hearted ...

MAINES: …Really?...

SAWYER: ... when you talk about apologizing for what you said about the President.

MAINES: ….It's not because it's not genuine. It's because I'm on guard now…I feel regret for, you know, the choice of words. Or the non-choice…Am I sorry that I asked questions and that I don't just follow? No.

ON PERSONAL THREATS:

MAGUIRE: …I also believe that yes, some of our fans were upset by it, but… does the punishment fit the crime? How far are you going to go? I think it's rational and totally acceptable for people to write a letter... and say "You know, I was really offended by what you said about the President."… we know some of our fans were shocked and ... and upset, and we are compassionate to that. I totally understand it. My problem is, when does it cross the line? When is trashing Emily's property okay? When is writing a threatening letter okay?...

MAINES ON THE FIRST SIGNS OF THE BACKLASH:

SAWYER: When was the first sign you had that there was sort of a seismic tremor from this?

MAINES: We were going into this hotel…and he [the Dixie Chicks' manager] got a call … he's pacing back and forth. "Oh, no!" You know, we're automatically going "What? What happened?" And then he says, you know, he gets off the phone and I was like, "What? What happened?" "Well, the AP picked up what was said the other night... But don't worry, it's going to blow over in three days." And I looked at him and I go, "No, it's not." He goes "Yes, it is, yes. Don't worry about it." You know, giving the old manager spiel. And I said, "Oh, I don't think so."

MARTIE MAGUIRE ON THE FALL-OUT:

MAGUIRE: …We are pretty tough and we have each other and we stand by each other through thick and thin and we know we're going to make mistakes…But this was colossal. This felt so colossal.

ON THEIR SUPPORT FOR US TROOPS:

NATALIE MAINES: …we support the troops. We support the troops l00 percent. We have said that from day one. People have quoted we don’t support the troops, which is the opposite of anything we have ever said. There is not a correlation between not wanting a war and not supporting the troops who are doing their job…

EMILY ROBISON: Martie and I have family in the military. But it’s nothing more than that we want to do than have our troops be safe, successful…you know we’re very patriotic…

DIANE SAWYER: ...But there are those who say to support them is to understand how much they believe in what they're doing. And it does matter to them that you believe in what they're putting their lives on the line for.

MAINES: …as passionate as they are about their cause, I love that about them, but accept that I am passionate about mine as well…

ON THE LONDON CONCERT:

SAWYER: Why did you say it?

MAINES: Out of frustration. At that moment, on the eve of war, I had a lot of questions that I felt were unanswered….

MAINES: You know we didn't walk off that stage going, oh my God, oh my God, I can't believe I said that.

Since she was never on my play list there even this would not get her there. But I do not think it is going to happen. I think the best career move Miss Maines could make right now is to learn how to flip burgers and say "Would you like fires with that?"

I'm SOOOO looking foreward to the numerous HEADLINES about their reception at various venues when they go on tour. It won't take too many unhappy fans to make a big STINK.

I recommend that Freepers who go to the Chix concerts film the "unhappy fans making a big stink" as evidence of the fact of the stink. Remember what happened at the CMT awards when the Dixie Chicks were booed live but appeared to be cheered when CMT replayed the scene? I believe the same thing happened when Hillary was booed in NYC after 9/11: liberal media elite sympathizers dubbed in the cheering.

She CLEARLY said that was the opinion of those who didn't listen to the music - the people she wanted to convert to fans

No, Joe. She said no such thing, clearly or otherwise. What's more, she didn't contradict the stereotype. All she said was give "it" (as in not people but a thing) a chance. The only case that can be made on the basis of that statement was that she was defending the music.

It's abundantly clear from all her quoted comments that she's not in tune with her fan-base in any sort of respectful way. You know, kind of like your posts.

(Maines said), "we support the troops. We support the troops l00 percent"....

On topic, sooooooo what was the big question that the Dixie Chick needed answered??????????

I'm sorry, but the more I read about them the more they offend me with their nonsense.

He isn't fooling anybody, he's been noticed ever since he snuck back on.

I don't think certain people are in a postion to be name-calling.

you never know. They were old enough to make their own decisions. Perhaps they had boyfriends or older siblings in the military. Maybe they like President Bush...

I think it's funny when children who have no idea what they are talking about (global warming, economics, etc) obviously parrot what they have been told. I think this is different. You may dissagree.

We saw the replay of the Flameworthy awards and noticed the cheers replacing the boos. We then turned off CMT and cancelled the cable the next day. We're fed up with the garbage and lies spread by the media each day. No more money from this house.

Nope. She needs the rednecks to be successful in her chosen style of music and the rednecks don't forget things like this.

Somebody like Babs or Moore make their money primarily from liberals anyway -- or at least from both. They are not quite so literally biting the hand that feeds them.

My antennae first went up with the "Earl" song and video...straight out of "women's studies" and only slighty funny...

Then there was all the crossover talk and more BS from Natalie's gator about "changing the face" of country music ..with CMT's help.....didn't much care for that either.

Then last fall, once again Nat's gator flops open to disparage Toby Keith's wonderful patriotic song as "rednecky" etc..that Bruce Springsteen's smarmy number was better for post 9-11..that steamed me but she actually got thru that unscathed.

The the big shoe dropped in London...nuff said on that already.

Excellent point. This was just the proverbial "last straw." Every time she spoke out and got away with it, she got bolder.

These "chicks" aren't interested in country music. They want to change it to be something else altogether. It's an internal attack on the values of the "rednecks" and "conservatives."

She's scared to death that the first concert in May, in South Carolina for God's sake, some Freeper is gonna stand up during her song and yell: "Go to Hell you Fuc!ing anti-American traitor!"

I guaranty she is scared to death of it. She's been performing to fawning crowds of adoring fans since she was 7 years old, and no one has ever booed her in person. Its her worst nightmare.

Who realy cares what she says now.

She spoke from her heart the first time.

She is entitled to speak her opinion.

I am entitled to spend my money how I please [at least until the democrats return to power]Meaning that if I don't want to spend my money buying her cd's and concert tickets, I can at least for now. [see parenthis]

Clarify please

nope

I made more than one valid point and have shored up my opinion on the matter. You have not acknowledge these while any one is enough to settle this debate. This shows that you have a closed mind on the matter.
