BB King was just asked about political comments during the war and he said "I think that there are going to be alot of things said tonight that I don't agree with."

Way to go B.B!

"Bridge Over Trouble Waters" seems like it would have been a much more fitting for the Grammy's

I agree. With Dustin Hoffman standing there, I thought they were all going to have a 60s flashback and do "Mrs. Robinson" from that stupid movie Dustin was in.

(somebody probably already made that joke, and how would I know, I can't possibly wade through all these comments, so give me a break just this once. :))

Vanessa writes her own songs as well as Michelle.

I think both of them are pericieved as 'too cute' to be serious

It was topped off by Dustin Hoffman immediately after doing a wink-wink nod-nod saying they" epitomized a generation".

Did Dustin Hoffman seem especially reserved to you? At the beginning, just real reserved. Like he'd been told to keep his mouth shut about the war, and he was almost sulking because of that, like a kid who'd been reprimanded.

The Sounds of Silence is a major work. We were looking for a song on a larger scale, but this was more than either of us expected. Paul had the theme and the melody set in November, but three months of frustrating attempts were necessary before the song 'burst forth". On February 19, 1964, the song practically wrote itself.

Its theme is man's inability to communicate with man. The author sees the extent of communication as it is on only its most superficial and "commercial" level (of which the "neon sign" is representative). There is no serious understanding because there is no serious communication - "people talking without speaking - hearing without listening". No one dares take the risk of reaching out ("take my arms that I might reach you") to disturb the sound of silence. The poet's attempts are equally futile (" . . . but my words like silent raindrops fell within the wells of silence"). The ending is an enigma. I find my own meaning in it, but like most good works, it is best interpreted by each person individually. The words tell us that when meaningful communication fails, the only sound is silence.

Wednesday Morning 3AM album notes
by Art Garfunkel, 1964

Yep, Vanessa didn't hit 'em all. Norah Jones is amazing, esp. for her age.

The break up was AFTER that concert, I think. Could be wrong...

No, they broke up in the 70s after Art wanted to get into acting (he ended up in a soft-porn film, I think). Art was never much of a songwriter and so he was seeking something else, I guess. Simon then went on his own and did some wonderful albums - the Kodochrome/Someone's Knocking on the Door period. They got together to much fanfare in the early 80s for the Central Park concert.

In the words of the website that was formed to rail against the VRWC that the Clintons' spoke "honestly" of, the 60s baby boomers need to MOVE ON.

Yeah, I remember when my boyfriend and I drove from L.A. to Oakland in his panel truck to see Jimi Hendrix at the Cow Palace. Wow! Some good bands in those days.

At least Chris Martin of Coldplay is consistent. I expected the M<ake Trade Fair and Fair trade Now stuff. He is always touting that.

Thank you for correcting me. Garfunkel has/had a voice of an angel. When I was a teenager I listened to his solo album, over and over and over.

I just heard that John Mayer won for "Your Body is a Wonderland." That is such a good song.

I just got home and turned it on to see the goofballs. This guy was playing, just before he won.

Is he retarded? He sings like he is. Decent guitar work, though.
