Why didn't Simon & Garfunkel sing "Bridge over Troubled Waters?" Sound of silence is an incredibly difficult song to sing with a very monotone harmonic. Not a good choice. I heard Garfunkel yesterday and he was in good voice. This was a bad choice and a bad performance. Actually, I found it painful to watch.

The adults in the business are seeing the backlash over the french..but the music industry is already on weak legs. Now, will the Adults in the Movie business get the picture?

That could be a much tougher proposition. I've seen posted on several FR threads that 70 percent of Hollyweird's take is from overseas ticket and tape/DVD sales (I haven't verified this), and anti-Americanism would probably help sales in the overseas market.

OTOH, movie studio finances aren't exactly the greatest either (big star salaries and special effects budgets are driving up the costs of making films dramatically), and piracy is eating into studios' bottom lines, even though I think they exagerate the extent of it. That 30% which represents the take in America could well be the difference between being profitable and going under, so we can hope that even Hollyweird could grow up.

I also thought that the soft orchestra arrangement with Vanessa Carleton did not play to her strenghts.

She is much better at the emotional angry torch song and they broadcast really didnt give her a chance to do it.

The main thing I remember about Sounds of Silence is that it came out on S and G's first album, a typical folk affair circa '64.

A knockoff like everyone was doing of the enormous success of Bob Dylan.

Then about the time everyone got their rips of Dylan into record stores, Dylan went electric.

Columbian then went back and took Simon's "Sounds of Silence" and just dubbed over electric guitars, base and drums. Voila! Instant update.

Simon IMHO was at best a mediocre songwriter anyway.

Regarding Simson and Garfinckel, all I can't say is "don't know why..." they were on this show. Its sort of like having Vanilla Ice open up, a bunch of relics from their decade. I thought Dustin Hoffman basically said something like that, implying that the 60's were of course the only decade that matters...

No other American Rock And Roll Band influenced the course of popular music as much as the Ramones did. Hands down. The Clash sucked. Never liked them. Did meet Strummer in NYC once and he was a real nice guy.

Now that the Grammys are over, I'll weigh in with just some of the best concerts I've seen of the last couple years (anything older will strain my memory take too much space):

James Brown, Brian Wilson (Pet Sounds tour), Sun Ra Arkestra, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones (Bridges To Babylon).

I searched All Music.com, and there are something like 600+ songs in the rock era titled "Fire." Lots of good cover material for Great White. Their biggest (only?) hit was "Once Bitten Twice Shy" as I recall, a cover of Ian Hunter/Mott the Hoople. I wondered if they could tweak it to the equally used adage, Once Burned Twice Shy.
