HONEST ABE DAY

His life was what America was all about. An average boy, born on this day in 1809 on a farm in a log cabin in Hodgenville, Kentucky, was able to become the 16th President of the United States. He studied hard, by the light of a fireplace, to become first, a lawyer, then a statesman. Abraham Lincoln, one of the most revered U.S. Presidents, served his country during one of the most turbulent times in its history. The term of his presidency (1861-1865) encompassed the Civil War between the States. His Emancipation Proclamation made on January 1, 1863 to free slaves; and his Gettysburg Address given on November 19, 1863 at the site of one of the most famous battlegrounds of the Civil War are still held high as classic statements of democratic beliefs and goals. President Lincoln was also responsible for one of the most popular holidays in the U.S.: Thanksgiving Day. He proclaimed that the last Thursday of November shall be observed as such. And so it was, and still is. Abraham Lincoln lived during tragic times and died a tragic death. While watching a performance of Our American Cousin at Washingtons Ford Theatre, he was shot by John Wilkes Booth and died a few hours later. Lincoln was the first U.S. President to be assassinated. Honest Abe earned his nickname when he was practicing law in Illinois. It was his unfailing honesty that made him known throughout the state. When convinced that his client was right, he could argue the case strongly. If not convinced, he was hardly powerful in his clients defense. Lincoln would persuade clients to settle out of court even though that meant he would receive a lesser fee. And, when this was not possible, he could argue a case equally as well before a judge or before an uneducated jury. To Abe Lincoln, being a lawyer or President meant seeking the truth for client or for country.

Hi Kay...
Bit... Is it still your birthday?!!!
Happy Birthday, Mate!
I was watching a PBS special... I know... I know... about America at War, in color. I started watching it, as the photography is fabulous. All done in color film. It is narrated by Martin Sheen, and about half way through it I became so disgusted with the divisive way America is treated. If you watch this, you're lead to believe that we all are racist, and selfish.
This is not the America I learned about from my uncles, aunts, parents, and grandparesnts, who lived through the war.
Can't these idiots do anything right?!!!
It is just maddening to listen to Martin Sheen pontificate how racist this country was, when we saved western civilzation from nazism, and imperialism!
We were not perfect, but we did a hell of a lot more good than bad during this time.

John...
I've posted twice... its not posting.

I read however I had to, but I had to read. Everything. Upside down and backwards ain't much of a thing for this Texas boy. ;>)
It's actually easier because upside-down triggers my "oh heck, translate/rotate/collate" thing.

I become more convinced every day that these people are truly evil, not merely misguided. The Holy Spirit brings cooperation and unity ...... those who divide and try to cause such chaos must be obeying a quite different master.

Is Art Bell still on the air? I used to listen to him sometimes - though I would never admit it at the time. You remember when he first went off the air and there was all that buzz about it? I wrote a poem about that and for some reason still have it on my computer.
The Mystery of Art Bell
Art Bell is off the air
Who's to blame? What do you think?
I heard that aliens wanted to shrink
Art Bell. Don't you care?
Art Bell is off the air!
Art Bell has gone away
I'm sure it's G-men behind his fate
Everyone knows those guys just hate
Art Bell. Did you hear me say,
Art Bell has gone away?
Art Bell is afraid for his life
Little green men who know how to fly
Came down to our planet just to spy
On Art Bell -- him and his wife.
Art Bell is afraid for his life.
Art Bell lives underground
Those government agents made his lid snap
With all of their talk about plans to kidnap
Art Bell. Now it's been found
Art Bell lives underground
Art Bell was in it too deep
Don't know whodunit, this sinister crime.
I guess you could say that it was just time
For Art Bell to take the ultimate sleep.
Art Bell, you'll agree, was in it too deep
Finally there's time to catch up on sleep

Lorena ~ FR is acting really funky tonight. I seem to be able to post right now though sometimes it takes a while for the comments to show up.
I'm going to go ahead and do the link to yesterday's thread ...... if you can get on later, you can serve up breakfast and the other goodies (and perhaps re-do the link if we've gone to another "page" by then ..... who knows how many missing posts might show up later tonight ..... LOL!).

LOL! I don't think Art is on the air any more. He left for a while and came back but I think he's off again now. I'm not sure if someone else does "his" show or if it's just disappeared into the twilight zone.
I'll confess to having listened to it some, too. When we first got in this business, we were out quite late at night cleaning buildings ..... did all the work ourselves to begin with. Our local talk radio station carried his show starting at midnight so I would listen to Art while driving around Charlotte and/or on the way home.
For some reason, we have really lousy radio reception in our home. The only time I listen to the radio is when I'm in the car.

Hey ... it worked...
And I see my other posts made it. I don't get it?
When I tried to follow up, I saw nothing.
Now its there.
OK...OK... Art Bell... are you still horsing around?
To: Mr. Mulliner
Nice picture.
Yep... a strange night on the thread. >-<-0
Am leaving before I go stark raving mad.
Night all.
Sleep tight!
To: Mr. Mulliner
MM, loved your "Mystery of Art Bell".
He comes on here at 9:00 every week night and when I'm out in the evening and come home after 9:00, I always listen to him - only because he's on the station my car radio is always on! But, I have to say that sometimes he does give a person pause - not paws, pause - to reflect on some of the weird stuff.

They're showing up, Jay ...... it just takes a while.
What is really weird is that on another thread I'm posting on tonight, my comments show up immediately but here there is a long delay. ?????

I remember one time in Seattle I was helping a friend sail his big 80-foot ketch across Puget Sound in the middle of the night. It was about November and a very cold, clear night. Art Bell was all abuzz about strange sightings in the sky in and around Seattle. We were in the perfect position to see whatever they were talking about, being out on the water and all. But my friends ridiculed Art Bell so much that I was embarrassed to have him on and did my best to forget about it.

We've used that, but you have to stir in jalapeno chunks and hablano paste to get the heat up. ;>)
I got dinged on my uniform today. Everything is now starched within a gnat's @$$ now. We're on a field trip tomorrow so Chef wants us looking 100%.
