Correct Valerie...I asked my wife the RN, and she told me that with all the drugs that were pumped into Jessica, those transplanted organs were toast.
But what about the corneas and her skin for our burn victims in RI? And other donatable parts?

If the organ mixup wasn't enough, the parents did NOT want Jessica to be removed from life support. In North Carolina the hospital doesn't need permission from the parents.
My question is why the rush? .. why not let the parents have a second opinion that their daughter was brain dead?
Don't most experts tell everyone to get a second opinion?

Nully, her organs are worthlessYet the hospital wanted her parents to donate them.
She didn't have chronic peritonitis. She didn't have an overwhelming systemic infection.
Different circumstances.

To: Mo1
I didn't know that Mo. But I agree that the Parents have an absolute RIGHT to get a second opinion. Moreover, I don't think that any hospital or Dr. should be free to take anyone off of life support IF the family has not authorized it.

Well it might be so that some patients aren't on life support for a very long time .. sometimes it's hard for families to make that kind of decission
But the parents should have been allowed a second opinion and waiting another day wouldn't hurt .. what was the rush
And I agree .. there is going to be huge law suit

Greg was on life support for more than a week... I allowed them to stop giving him insulin and other meds, but insisted they give him food and water - basic humane care. They said he would die peacefully on his own in a few days, but he lingered on and on in ICU, and finally they asked if they could take him off the respirator, and I agreed. I came back into his room afterward, the lights were low and I was playing soft music on the CD player and kissed him good bye and he lived for about 4 more minutes and died while I held his hand - the doctors and nurses heard the alarm and came back into the room and entered the time of his death on the charts, and that was the end. The decision was mine, and there was no real pressure to hurry it along.
I don't understand the rush to disconnect Jesica.

When you flatline, you flatline...it's over. The question is then, how much good can be done with the viable parts, if you are so inclined.
I hope that the judge that gets this case tells the plaintiff, "You are here illegally. You came here to roll the dice that American doctors would be able to heal your daughter who would die shortly regarless. I am sorry for your loss. Case dismissed."
Harsh, perhaps, but it's the way I feel about it.

I think the rush is get rid of the evidence and bury this thing as quickly as possible.
To: lodwick
You mean she's an illegal immigrant or was did her family just bring her to the US for the surgery. If so, who stood to pay for the surgery etc.?? Perhaps then, the parents have no right to sue. They aren't US citizens.
To: ValerieUSA
A beautiful story about Greg...there is something special about being there, and handing off a loved one to the next life.
An experience that is like no other.

Her mother and she were smuggled in about four years ago, and got on the waiting list at Duke. You know the rest.
I do not blame the mother at all - I would have done the same thing, but to let it go any further is ridiculous.
They got their shot and it was not meant to be.

I know they came here illegally .. but that is a seperate issuse. It is my understanding that the money was raised for this operation .. it didn't come from medicare .. and the hospital and the donor place or both screwed up royally.
I don't care if these people were her legally or illegally .. the hospital should NOT get off with a slap on the hand .. They F'd up BIG TIME
