The Guild 1-30-2003 Whiney Enviroweenies

National Environmental Trust

Philip Clapp, president:
“This is the first time President Bush has mentioned the environment in a State of the Union, and the reason is simple: his poll numbers with the swing voters he needs in 2004 — women, independents and suburban voters — are dropping. This was window-dressing pure and simple.

“After two years of rolling back environmental protections, he has discovered there’s a cost. “President Bush’s environmental promises always come with a “Buyer Beware” sign. “His air pollution plan actually allows power plants to pollute more, for a decade longer, than the current Clean Air Act allows. “His forest plan allows timber companies to cut down 3,000 truckloads a year of the great trees in the Sequoia National Monument. [snip]

Sierra Club

Daniel Becker, global warming and energy program director:
“Fuel cells are an important part of a clean energy future, but the president’s rhetoric does not match the reality. President Bush’s FreedomCAR program is built on the flawed Partnership for A New Generation of Vehicles, which squandered billions of taxpayer dollars in research and development but did not bring a single hybrid vehicle to the marketplace. Similarly, the FreedomCAR program funnels millions to Detroit without requiring that they produce a single fuel cell vehicle for the public to purchase.

“The auto industry is using the promise of future fuel cells as a shield against using existing technology to dramatically cut our oil dependence, and pollution, today. This technology is sitting on the shelf while Detroit dithers. Honda and Toyota are producing hybrid vehicles today, the big three are not. Honda has stated that it is using the electric motor of its hybrid as the basis for the fuel cell cars which it is beginning to produce. Meanwhile, FreedomCAR is re-inventing the wheel. Refusing to demand that the Big Three use modern, gas-saving technology is irresponsible. [snip]

Natural Resources Defense Council

David Hawkins, climate director:
It’s surprising how brazen the president is being at taking what are rollbacks and delays and claiming that they are initiatives. Both of the activities (Clear Skies and Healthy Forests) that he featured in his statement last night are prime examples of that.”

“Having a program to accelerate the use of hydrogen fuels is a good idea but the president talked of a car that would be available in 16 years. We need something to deal with the next 16 years ... such as improving the fuel efficiency standards.” [snip]

It goes without saying if clintoon had proposed all this the enviroweenies would have made him a hero.

Count Dracula always made eye contact before he attacked his victims.

Why is anyone bothering with this has-been? Are we to believe he has pertinent intelligence info on Al-Queda and North Korea?

Exactly what did he do about these threats on his own watch?

He must realize how irrelavent he truly is now that we have a real leader who is unafraid to act.

Sorry Bill, the parade passed you by. Your legacy went down the oval office sink.

Instead of some ruffles and flourishes, the band ought to play "Devil in a Blue Dress" everytime Clinton shows up somewhere.

I cannot understand how people can continue to fall for his B.S. I mean, please, he sleeps with high priced call girls, for god's sake, so is that where he's getting his intelligence on Iraq?

I just came back from my MP's office, and lo and behold, she will be in town tomorrow, and may appear at the office, then again, the lil people have to make appointments to see such a regal personnage as her.I think it was the part when the office ladies asked "And what would you like to discuss with Bonnie?" where I replied " I'd like to know why she supports Saddam Hussein and not the US" that brought our cordial meeting to an abrupt end ;-)I do hope they have heard plenty of that the past 24 hrs.

Just peeking in to let you know I am still alive. There is so much work to be done when I'm on the road. This week my teeth have started giving me fits. Dental appt. first thing tomorrow morning.

My entire computer system at home fried last Friday morning. Dell is replacing it cost free, assuming there was a short in it somewhere due to the Fried Mouse on Thursday nite, then the entire system going down on Fri when I touched it.

I will be heading back into my own neighborhood in about an hour, but I'm scheduled with a meeting this evening, and I have no idea whether or not I have any computer system at all at home.

Please be strong when criticizing the obstructionists, in my absence.

You two get the prize for the most astute Clinton-related observations of the day:

Your legacy went down the oval office sink.

he sleeps with high priced call girls, for god's sake, so is that where he's getting his intelligence on Iraq?

That pretty much sums it up. Say no more, say no more.

I just want to take this opportunity to mention I'm doing all I can to Save the Earth for the third generation of children, with names like "Granola", "Dandelion", and "Sparkle", who've sprung from the loins of middle-aged, dimwitted Sixties twits.

Interesting analysis from The Nation of Clinton's ongoing role in Democrat politics, Hillary's future and what the Dems need to do if they ever want to regain control. Here are some snippets:

Clinton lends personal counsel to the candidates. A former aide felt sure he has spoken with all of them, but Clinton seems to have thrown an avuncular arm around young Senator John Edwards in particular. The former President has praised Edwards extravagantly, makes late-night phone calls to kibitz the senator's speeches and coaches him on how to frame economic issues. In December Edwards got a sit-down briefing on foreign affairs from British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Bill Clinton made a call to arrange it. ...

Among (Hillary's) followers, there's a consensus that 2004 is not a propitious time for her ambitions--it's too soon in her independent political career and, besides, most unpromising for any Democrat at this point. But 2008 beckons with opportunity for her. One politician in Hillary's orbit recently wisecracked: "'04 is the year of clearing out the white guys."

Supporting the war is insufficient, Clinton warned. "I approve of what's being done in Iraq now and the way it's being done, but it's not enough," he said.

After gagging and retching, I finally had to leave The Nation after this pronouncement.

That's it! That's the car! And I just remembered more of the dream--I was drag racing Martin Sheen, and he was winning and laughing at me, there on his fat-tire Schwinn. I will never forget the humiliation.

Updates on the European leaders' open letter supporting Bush's Iraq policy:

1) Note that the U.S. version of the letter was published in the Wall St. Journal, NOT the NY Times. Five years ago it would have been unthinkable that such an important letter would be published anywhere but the Times. How things have changed. (As of this writing, the Times has yet to report anything about the letter).

2) Here's Reuters' headline on the subject:
"Gang-of-Eight Iraq Letter Rubs Salt in EU Wounds."
Isn't that amazing?!

3) Remember when the left sniffed with disdain at American tourists abroad...acting embarassed by them? You see, those of us from flyover country can't possibly appreciate the culture of European countries.

How things have changed. Here's Robert Sheer in the Nation:
"...we are likely to march to war with the support of an 'international coalition' that amounts to a fig leaf named Tony Blair and a motley collection of nations one can buy on EBay."

"A motley collection of nations one can buy on EBay": This is what Robert Scheer thinks of the Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal and Spain. Talk about your ugly Americans

James S. Robbins of National Review makes a fabulous point:

All these Democrats--Kennedy, Byrd, Daschle, Pelosi, et al--are demanding "convincing evidence" that Iraq poses a threat to the U.S. They really want PERFECT evidence.

But these are the same people who excoriated the FBI and CIA for not connecting gauzy, widespread dots before the 9/11 attacks.

What, hypocracy among Dims? Naaaaahhhhhh.
