The Guild 1-30-2003 Whiney Enviroweenies

National Environmental Trust

Philip Clapp, president:
“This is the first time President Bush has mentioned the environment in a State of the Union, and the reason is simple: his poll numbers with the swing voters he needs in 2004 — women, independents and suburban voters — are dropping. This was window-dressing pure and simple.

“After two years of rolling back environmental protections, he has discovered there’s a cost. “President Bush’s environmental promises always come with a “Buyer Beware” sign. “His air pollution plan actually allows power plants to pollute more, for a decade longer, than the current Clean Air Act allows. “His forest plan allows timber companies to cut down 3,000 truckloads a year of the great trees in the Sequoia National Monument. [snip]

Sierra Club

Daniel Becker, global warming and energy program director:
“Fuel cells are an important part of a clean energy future, but the president’s rhetoric does not match the reality. President Bush’s FreedomCAR program is built on the flawed Partnership for A New Generation of Vehicles, which squandered billions of taxpayer dollars in research and development but did not bring a single hybrid vehicle to the marketplace. Similarly, the FreedomCAR program funnels millions to Detroit without requiring that they produce a single fuel cell vehicle for the public to purchase.

“The auto industry is using the promise of future fuel cells as a shield against using existing technology to dramatically cut our oil dependence, and pollution, today. This technology is sitting on the shelf while Detroit dithers. Honda and Toyota are producing hybrid vehicles today, the big three are not. Honda has stated that it is using the electric motor of its hybrid as the basis for the fuel cell cars which it is beginning to produce. Meanwhile, FreedomCAR is re-inventing the wheel. Refusing to demand that the Big Three use modern, gas-saving technology is irresponsible. [snip]

Natural Resources Defense Council

David Hawkins, climate director:
It’s surprising how brazen the president is being at taking what are rollbacks and delays and claiming that they are initiatives. Both of the activities (Clear Skies and Healthy Forests) that he featured in his statement last night are prime examples of that.”

“Having a program to accelerate the use of hydrogen fuels is a good idea but the president talked of a car that would be available in 16 years. We need something to deal with the next 16 years ... such as improving the fuel efficiency standards.” [snip]

It goes without saying if clintoon had proposed all this the enviroweenies would have made him a hero.

A couple more tidbits from this morning's perusal of the newspapers:

Former White House adviser Mary Matalin continues to toil for the Bush administration, albeit from home where she can spend more time with her two children. That no doubt means she's been seeing more of her husband, former Clinton strategist and Democratic guru James Carville.

Asked this week by nationally syndicated radio host Sean Hannity how she trusts her hubby not to sneak a peek at any confidential White House files she's carried home, NewsMax.com quotes Mrs. Matalin as saying of Mr. Carville: "He has the span of concentration of a hummingbird or mosquito. He couldn't look at it long enough to know what it was." [Sounds like there's a lot of respect for the spousal unit in that marriage] WashTimes

More on that high-class champagne and pigs-in-a-blanket Super Bowl party to which none of us was invited:

Meanwhile, folks are buzzing about the invitation-only Super Bowl party hosted by Bill and Chelsea Clinton at the Steigenberger Belvedere Hotel during the World Economic Summit in Davos, Switzerland. Best man-bites-dog moment: Clinton and Georgia Republican Party Chairman Ralph Reed, who launched Pat Robertson's once-powerful Christian Coalition, standing side by side in front of the big screen and trading insights about the game. The leaders of eight European states have issued a joint declaration of support for the United States in its efforts to disarm Iraq.

Old Europe meet the New Europe.

It appears one of the "Joe Millionaire" finalists may have a few things hidden in her closet:

Bound for Victory?

How charming.

God I swear I think I would kiss the first journalist who had the brains/work ethic to get the facts right on New Source Review in regard to air regulations (come to think of it, that probably won't encourage any of them to do their job correctly. But you get the idea….). My day job is environmental consulting, specifically air pollution matters. What a lot of half wits (and/or outright liars) call "relaxing" the regs is nothing of the sort.

Quickly. New Source Review (NSR) is a group of regs that has been around for over a decade. As part of NSR, if a plant increases emissions it must then jump through various bureaucratic hoops, dependent on size. Increased production may (or may not) trigger this as well. But what constitutes increased production is debatable. The regs were not specific on what type of maintenance or what replacements could be considered as increases in production. In fact, the regs were written and specifically stated these factors needed to be determined at a later date.

Bush's people are just following up on defining allowed maintenance. It is NOT a weakening of the regs - these terms were previously undefined! As for the definition finally settled upon - let me put it this way: if an enviro-weenie thinks their car's emissions should be retested after its tires are rotated, then they have a consistent reason to complain about the NSR rulings. Stupid and pointless reasoning, but consistent.

Ralph is a better man than me. I would have thrown the weenie in his face and kicked him in the shins.

Anti-war scum have no shame apparently. Let's get a gander at Marilyn Nelson...

Have a look at some of her poems. Link I think her stuff stinks but then I hate poetry. So if anyone else would like to take a look perhaps we could get a less biased opinion.

(Happy people live longer. I plan on living forever)

Even though Marilyn is smiling in that picture to do what she was planning is the act of a very unhappy person. Which seems to be the mood of most liberals these days. May they all croak asap.

From Mama's Promise
I have no answer to the blank inequity
of a four-year-old dying of cancer.
I saw her on TV and wept
with my mouth full of meatloaf.
So this is the poet laureate?

I honestly don't know how Ralph could stand there and make chitchat with that vile creature without tossing his "pigs-in-a-blanket" and bubbly all over Blubba's shoes.

I've heard of crying in your beer, but weeping through your meatloaf? I get choked up - in more ways than one - thinking about it. BTW, I am not a poetry fan, either. Like I said, these people should get real jobs.

Good morning Pippin!

Here's an interesting story about Canada's newest position on the war.

Will Canada Support War, or Not?

TORONTO, Jan. 29 -- Prime Minister Jean Chretien addressed a news conference last week about his position on war with Iraq, but some reporters went away not quite sure what that position was.

The headline in the Globe and Mail newspaper read: "PM to Bush: Hold off on War." The Toronto Star said: "Chretien Supports U.S. Push for War." The National Post later ran photos of the papers with the headline: "Canada's Position on Iraq: Which Is the Right One?"

I'm not trying to start anything with you Pippin, I thought this might help you understand our frustration with Canada.

This paragraph is good news:

The poll showed that many Canadians are more concerned about the United States than about Iraq. The poll found that 36 percent of respondents think the United States is the biggest threat to world peace, not Iraq, al Qaeda or North Korea.

So only 36% of Canadians are wackos, just like here in the good old USofA! :-)

It's bizarre alright! Even more bizarre that we live in the same country as these loons.

This was the only thing the Founding Fathers did wrong, not providing in the Constitution that dreadlock wearing, mind altered, apologists for evil should be taken from our country and put on their own special island.

There once was a woman from Chappaqua
Who had a rear the size of a pasha
Her pantsuit was crusty
Her social skills rusty
And bill ain't her offspring's papa!

I'm sending that one to our governor. You may soon be addressing me as Florida Poet Laureate. Ha!
