Lord of the Rings:
Return of the King!
Pictures, spy reports and spoilers thread (ongoing)
Countdown to December!
Larger version of above image here
Beyond this point there be spoilers!
Like spoilers? Keep reading!
Don't want spoilers? Click HERE and don't look back!
Don't say we didn't warn you! Spoilers are what this thread is all about. So bring your rumors (substantiated or not!), spoilers, spy reports, and bones of contention about them here as the snippets of RoTK news, photos and interviews come rolling in.
I wouldn't even recommend pinging people to this thread unless you know they want to see them. There are a lot of purists out there that hate to have anything given away before the movie comes out. I, however, am not one of those.
I will start a "RoTK spoilers ping list" separate from the other Tolkien ping lists
so let me know if you want to be on the spoiler alert list!" If we use this thread for that kind of stuff, we won't shock people who don't want to see it. (though I bet they look anyway!)
Report 'em if you got 'em!
One tip
.. Don't embed images from TORN (TheOneRing.Net) on this thread. If possible, load the image to another server, or just post a link to the TORN page. TORN's servers are powered by fleas I think, and are horrendously slow, particularly when they have something that is particularly good!

Certainly! - But weren't you already on the list?! :~D
I could ping you twice for the really good stuff - Like this one eh?!
To: HairOfTheDog
I knew I was on the LOTR ping list, but wasn't sure if I was on a "spoiler" list. Just had to make sure! ;-)
Thanks!

Hair: thanks very much, it was a great read, BUT I'm not an expert, an enthusastic afficiando, indeed. A few quibbles here and there but overall a very good job, I forwarded it to work to print it out so I review at leisure.
The fletching being hand wrapped was a nice touch but it usually isnt just tied on. Hide glue has been around for a long, long time and would have likely been used to afix the feather prior to wrapping. Hide glue is water soluble so humidity or rain etc. dissolves it. Hence the wrapping. Have done this myself a few times, yes it is tricky but doable. If glue isnt used one feather is secured with a single wrap, then the second, another wrap etc. then all three are bound. The rear of the feathers are bound then the wrapping of rest of the feather commences, once the front and back edges are secured. Yes, it helps to have three hands. :-) I'll pass this onto G'nad. Thanks again to you and MBY.

So much for RoTK bein' "in the can"!
Non-Spoiler alert!
LOTR: The Return of the King: 'Jay' talked with a source within WETA very early in the New Year who has news that some might find a little disheartening: "This time around '******' worked on Gollum. He explained all of the difficulty and the basic problems that they had to work around. To make a long story short, I asked him if he was to continue working on Gollum or if he would get to work on Shelob. He told me that he didn't know and that they had not even started to work on Shelob at all. The rumor that the upcoming trailer would have images of Shelob are most likely incorrect from what I have been told. Although the principal shooting had been done, the special effects won't be finished until the release".

Does this mean that the movie won't come out in December of this year as planned?

Oh no.... it'll be out Dec 17, I had just heard earlier reports that it was done - "in the can" - finished - wrapped up. Not so I guess! They'll be working on it all summer at this rate.

Finally! - A small tidbit of news...
Spoiler alert!
From TheOneRing.netROTK: The Six-Hour Cut
2/12/03, 5:27 am EST - Tehanu
Asfaloth wrote to say that the IMBD Pro magazine had some snippets about ROTK. "Rumors in early 2003 have it that the first cut is six hours long because of the amount of material from Tolkien's original story that remains to be covered." So I guess there's still a little bit of work to be done in the editing suite.
How To Kill a Saruman
2/12/03, 5:15 am EST - leo
TORn Staffer Asfaloth dug up a small but quite funny bit of information on Christopher Lee's character of Saruman: There are reportedly five different death scenes filmed for the character of Saruman. Christopher Lee has said that he had no idea which one would be used in the final cut.
I for one hope they'll use the one from the books...
To: HairOfTheDog
I expect the final (theatrical) cut of ROTK will be about 4 hours. Wow, to have to cut 1/3 of the material to get it in the theater. Hopefully, we won't have to wait too long for the Extended Edition to come out.
Alternatively (dreaming here), Jackson could go back to New Line and have them release the six hour cut as two different movies AT THE SAME TIME (or at least within a very short time frame). I would have no problem with LOTR being a 4 "movie" epic.
To: JameRetief
I like your alternate version!
To: HairOfTheDog
Six hours sounds just fine to *me*!
To: Mamzelle
I would watch 6 hours!
To: JameRetief
My wild and fond hope is that the movies will be so successful that there will someday be a 'director's cut' for all three movies and that Jackson will be able to put absolutely everything he wants into them. I personally, would be happy to pay hundreds for such a collected special edition :)
