AMERICA - The Right Way!! (Day 717) [Remember the Trade Center!!]
Various News Sources and FReepers | January 7, 2003 | All of Us

Posted on 01/07/2003 4:13:11 AM PST by Chairman_December_19th_Society

We will not tire, we will not falter, and we will not fail! [President Bush]

Good morning!! Do not let the victims of the attacks on New York and Washington, nor the brave member of our Nation's military who have given their lives to protect our freedom, die in vain!!

Reuters is reporting that North Korea warned that if sanctions are imposed against it for its nuclear weapons development program, it will mean war.

The Washington Times is saying the troop buildup is moving along in such a way that a February attack against Iraq could be ordered by the President.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi Government announced it is building two defense rings around Baghdad. The outer ring is composed of regular Iraqi army and Republican Guards. The Iraqis expect that defense line cannot be held, so they have built an inner line, composed of "Special Republican Guards." (This is the first such mention of these units I have come across - wonder if that was because of the miserable showing of the "vaunted" Republican Guards in the 1991 war. Wonder if these "Special" units will do any better.) The Iraqi Government says it is upon this defense line the American army will break.

Stateside - Dick Gebhardt announced he will not run for any more Congressional terms after his time in the 108th Congress is over.

For AMERICA - The Right Way, I remain yours in the Cause, the Chairman.

Are you a big hockey fan (or am I guilty of stereotyping ..... LOL!)? I made two round trips to Charlotte today so heard lots of talk radio.

This evening they were talking about a set of billboards around town that had everyone puzzled. The first set of signs had just a big red ball on it that had people scratching their heads and thinking "Japanese flag." Then the signs were changed to include some Japanese writing ..... and then another transformation added the word (in English) Suzuki. Eventually it became clear what was being advertised ...... and a very clever campaign it is.

It seems that the Charlotte minor league hockey team has acquired a Japanese hockey player, Takahito Suzuki. I know nothing about the sport (except that the US Olympic team defeated the Russians and went on to win the Gold Medal and it was one of the greatest upsets in sports history!) but apparently this guy is quite good .... will represent the team on the All-Star team this year.

The promotion has generated quite a bit of interest so seems to have been quite successful. Oh, the original big red spot? It seems that it is the background for the team logo ...... :-)

I know a soupcon about hockey ;-)You team must be in the ECHL, correct? Just rent Slapshot with Paul Newman and you'll learn all you need to know about the game. It's NASCAR and WWF on ice ;-)See, you're converted already. The ECHL is for smaller players and goons, so you can see the goals and da fights all in one family night out!

The Bears Still Suck Polka

written by J.Krueger-sung by OTTO

How many times must we take this disgrace
Another Bears fan throwing insults in our face
The Packers are the greatest team to ever play the game
Even if from time to time they've been a little lame.

How could you ever love a team with Jim McMahon
Not even Porky Pig was as big a ham
They got a reputation that's mostly based on luck
The Bears…Still…Suck

The Bears still suck, the Bears still suck
The Bears still suck, the Bears still suck
They really really really really really really suck
Yes the Bears…Still…Suck

If you drive to Soldier Field they make you pay a toll
For cripes sake they only won one lousy Super Bowl
They make fun of Wisconsin, but we don't get upset
Where do you think that they're all headed every chance they get?

We don't really hold a grudge 'cause this is all in fun
As far as football rivalries we're both number one
Still we wouldn't mind seeing Ditka run over by a truck
'Cause the Bears…Still…Suck

The Bears still suck, the Bears still suck
The Bears still suck, the Bears still suck
They really really really really really really suck
Yes the Bears…Still…Suck

(All the ladies now) The Bears still suck, the Bears still suck
The Bears still suck, the Bears still suck
They really really really really really really suck
Yes the Bears…Still…Suck

(Everybody now) The Bears still suck, the Bears still suck
The Bears still suck, the Bears still suck
They really really really really really really suck
Yes the Bears…Still…Suck…HEY !!

You do know just a teeny bit if you know that the Checkers are in the ECHL .... either that or you did a quick search on Google (which I doubt) ....... LOL!

I've never been to one of their games but my son went with some friends of his when he was in high school ..... he really enjoyed it.

The few games I have ever watched (Olympics and parts of a few NHL games) I have found fascinating, though I've never been able to figure out the rules. How many stitches are allowed per player per game? [ouch!] I'm one of those people who can't walk and chew gum at the same time ...... how those guys do all that stuff on ice skates just flabs my gasts!

I heard part of the President's speech today and have been eager to get to FR to see all the discussion ...... and now, if there's a LIVE thread, I can't find it.

Is anybody talking about it on FR? Or is that it's being talked about everywhere on FR? Maybe I need to go check out some other threads.

The ECHL is where draft picks go to die....before they get a contract and end up in Stuttgart or Mannheim in the German League. There are teams dotted all over the south and it seems incongruous to have hockey in New Orleans or Birmingham, but its a good entree to minor-minor pro sports. Some kids get a shot at the AHL and maybe the NHL, but once consigned to the ECHL, its very hard to make it.

So it wouldn't be world class hockey, huh? I guess they figure, rightly, that most of us Southerners wouldn't know the difference ...... *grins*

Though I will say that there are an awful lot of Northerners who have moved down this way ....... a lot in the Charlotte area and gazillions in the Research Triangle area (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill).

Thanks, sweetie! I'll go check it out.

Btw, what I heard of the speech sounded fantastic!!! I particularly like the parts where he was saying that if a tax break was good in 2, 3, 4 years then why not go ahead and implement it now. I wonder if the 'rats can say snookered? ... out-strategerized? .... mis-underestimated? ...... hehe!

Do you know anything about that Suzuki guy? What they were saying on the radio was that he is small but the coach says he's the fastest hockey player he's ever seen. From what you say about the talent the coach has seen, that may not be a very dramatic statement though.

The Prez and his speechwriters did good today. I checked in on the News Hour tonight and Jimbo himself ran the interviews on it. The debate was between the OMB head and a Rat Congressman. Both knew their business. The Rat was actually reasonable, only he's a good Rat and therefore peppered his comments with Democrat populism. He was from South Carolina and reminded me of Old School Democracy.

The good news is that he was unable to dismiss the President's plan; his only defense, or offense, was that the President's plan wouldn't have an immediate effect.

IM-not-so-HO, x-ing the dividends tax has a greater benefit than, even, taking Cap Gains to zero (that, too). By making dividens non-taxable it will move investments to companies that pay dividends, if only for the tax benefits. This will return corporate governance to profits and long term strategies to enhance profits as opposed to stock prices. Stock pricing based on profitabily will rise more soundly than if it were based on projected growth, the 1990s blossom model. This is very good news, and Godspeed for it.

Did you see Frist's performance today? The Dems tried to backhand an agreement to pass an unemployment extension. They said the Republican plan was unfair, as it didn't include those ALREADY OFF UNEMPLOYMENT. They wanted to put long-term unemployed back on unemployment, even though they've already passed the time extensions. The idea is stupid, ugly and unworkable.

Frist told them to go to hell (ever so softly). From the thread here on FR, it seems that it was Hilbery who was behind the move, although the news item I saw had Daschle leading it.

Either way, it supports a Nicollo prediction from a while ago that the Dems were gonna taste payback. Informal "agreements" are immensely important to the Senate. As nothing goes without a strong majority there, almost nothing goes forward on the floor that has not been hashed out already. Turning on a measure at the last minute breaks that confidence, and thereby ruins future "agreements." Frist said "call" today. The Dems caved. Good stuff.

Like the measure or not, it's a good start for a more orderly Senate than we've seen over the last two years. It is NOT good news for Hillary whose strategy so far has been disruption. Daschle lost two steps at the starting gate.
