Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

She really is plastered! - I will head to the chat room if that is easier!

"I thought I had gotten good at parsing during the klinton administration"
Well, if Hillary gets elected, we'll probably get "two for one" again, and Bill will be (one of our) president(s) all over again.
Yes, I love that line by Bilbo, made me laugh out loud while reading the book. Like Jackson's addition, too.

Let us hope that Oscars do better on that account. There's all the buzz about the "Smeagol nomination" (which is all fine), but I think Wood's performance was even more perfect.
To: Scott from the Left Coast
They aren't pushing him for a nomination, I don't think.
They are puching Serkis, McKellen and Viggo.
To: HairOfTheDog
they are pushing, not puching...
To: HairOfTheDog
Yes, well, it wouldn't be the first time that powers-that-be didn't watch a movie with the eyes and listen with their ears.
To: Scott from the Left Coast
I think they probably think he is too young.
Maybe for RoTK Viggo will get actor nomination because he is the title role, but Elijah will get Supporting.

Did you ride the Crescent while the Southern had itI rode The Crescent many years ago from my hometown to Meridian. Several girl cousins and I went to spend a week with our Aunt who is a Nun and was teaching at the Catholic school and living in the convent there. That was a FUN week!
When I rode it next, in 1981, I believe Amtrak had already taken it over, but you're right, it is still a nice train, especially after you get out of the Northeast corridor! The last time I rode it was in 1995, from Worcester, MA to Birminham, AL. I had our two younger kids with me. They were 7 and 5 at the time, and they STILL talk about it. They had a great time!

We'll have to wait to see the performances to judge, but it sure is hard to think of the Frodo role as "supporting".
To: Scott from the Left Coast
I know! - But there is no clear lead either. We'll see!
To: Scott from the Left Coast; HairOfTheDog
I don't know, I see Frodo as clearly more important than anyone else in the story, I don't have any doubt that he is the main protagonist.
If the movie muddies this point, I would see that as a flaw.
To: Sam Cree
The trouble is, the catagories and the rules don't fit our story very well.
I don't think he could ever be considered the lead. He isn't the title role, and he won't have the majority of the screen time.... barely half. Too many leads!
I think the only reason Viggo could get nominated in the actor category is that he is at least the title role.
I see it as a good thing for the film, because it opens up another slot we might get nominations for.... instead of just supporting. There just isn't a clear enough lead in TTT.
To: HairOfTheDog
How do you mean, "title role?"
Though I do agree that the book defies normal categorization as well, which, I guess, is one of its strengths.
To: Sam Cree
Return of the King..... He is the "title" role for the film.
To: HairOfTheDog
Yeah, come to think of it, you're right, it's in the title.
But the story isn't primarily about the king, I don't think, or even his return. The heart of the story, IMO, is the fulfillment of the quest, against all odds, by the unlikely hero who will never really recover, Frodo.
Wonder what they will do, though, this thing probably doesn't come close to fitting into their usual guidelines. It's been so long since I watched the Oscars, that I don't even know what the acting awards are.
It does seem unlikely that they would want to give any top awards to a kid.
To: Sam Cree
RoTK will be tough, like TTT.
At least there are only two story lines this time!
Big war, with the climax of the battle intermixed with the scene at the cracks of doom. The coronation of the king will be a beautiful scene. I bet, and the grey havens....
Can't wait!
To: Sam Cree
Decaprio was no older when he was nominated for What's eating Gilbert Grape....
To: HairOfTheDog
I think everyone in the film is beautifully cast, and that they all do a fantastic job bringing their characters to life.
If the award is just for best acting, I guess that doesn't mean the rest have to be considered supporting roles anyway. I reckon they should give best acting to them all, as a combined award.
I like the Theoden guy alot, on a side note.
To: HairOfTheDog
Well, all the dogs are in tonight, since it's cold out, think I'll go to bed, too.
It is a shame to wait another year. That'll be fun, with the Entmoot and all, though.
To: Sam Cree
I think the awards are "Best Actor in a Leading role" or Best Actor in a Supporting role"... That is why is is tough to fit them to our film
Good night!
