Am listening to some very good acoustic guitar music...my favourite kind. If you like really mellow acoustic guitar I highly recommend:
Sounds of Wood and Steel, Windham Hill Collection (all artists using Taylor guitars)

Windham Hill 25 Years of Guitar

Anything by Ed Gerhardt

Thanks... I only have one acoustic guitar CD... I think it's Phil Keagy (sp?) ... one thing I really liked about Austin's Sixth Street was the excellent blues guitar music and singing.

After a pair of 7+ers in Sumatra this week, the deadly quake in Italy and the volcanic activity picking up around the world, Saddam's weapons of mass destruction might look really puny.

Volcano Erupts in Ecuador Forcing Closure of Quito Airport

The Associated Press
Published: Nov 3, 2002

QUITO, Ecuador (AP) - A volcano outside Ecuador's capital spewed a cloud of hot ash Sunday, forcing the closure of its airport and a nearby highway near, and showering Quito in white ash.

No injuries were reported from the eruption of Reventador - an 11,775-foot volcano located 59 miles northeast of Quito on the eastern slope of the Andes.

Alexandra Avarado of the Geophysical Institute said the volcano began erupting at 7:30 a.m. with a larger blast at 9:00 a.m. The latter blast sent clouds of burning ash that reached the Baeza-Lago Agrio highway.

The eruption also threatened the Trans-Ecuadorean oil pipeline that runs close to the area.

"It was a very important eruption. Extremely large clouds of ash have been spotted, at least 7 miles high and the cloud is heading toward the Inter-Andean corridor," Avarado said.

QUITO, Ecuador

Interesting city...was there in 1996, and as I recall the elevation is around 9,000 feet. Flew down to Loja in the south, drove for 4 hours, hiked for 3 to a camp. The first night in camp the worst quake I have ever felt hit the place. I just knew we were heading for the Amazon basin via mattress.

Interesting camp...always had two shotgun-totting guards following me everywhere I went...lots of banditios and fire fights between rival mining camps. The security there made Africa look like a Boy Scout camp...(not that there is anything wrong with the Boy Scouts.)

Maybe I should stop worrying about tornados in Texas, and start worrying about volcanos and earthquakes *L*

I remain concerned...the rest of the world is getting lots of earthquake attention and we are being ignored...does not give me that warm fuzzy feeling we all want.

When I was in Ecuador it was right after the most recent Peru-Ecuador border battle. Flew from Quito to Loja which is in the south and was the main staging area for the war. When we got on the plane, flown by the Ecuadorean Air Force, everyone with weapons had to deposit them on the flight deck when they got on the plane...a Fokker-80 as I recall. When I got on the plane there was a big pile of Uzis, AK-47's, and ten or 15 pistols right behind the pilots. Again, that warm-fuzzy feeling was missing.

The mining camp I was in had a perimenter fence with guard-towers at the corners...all armed with light machine guns. The only thing that bothers me in this environment is that I couldn't pack heat. Nothing worries me more than a bunch of kids armed with automatic weapons...and me naked.

Self defense is a God-given right and oughtn't be stripped in the name of law and order.

The local village, (can't remember the name, but I will) was a real trip. It was like the 1860's in the US. Bars, cathouses, and barbershops all in-one...we had armed guards when we visited. Custom stamp mills and guys hauling 80-pound sacks of gold ore on their shoulders to the stamp mills. Explosions from blasting from holes all over the place. Can't explain how neat it was.

The year before I was there, there was a big landslide that buried over 600 people...the whole hillside was covered with memorial crosses.
