I didn't want anyone to miss the latest from Paris! (from the last thread) Thanks mountaineer, sounds like you all are having a great time. We're looking forward to pictures!
********************************
Hi, everyone, from Paris. Today Mr. M and I had the pleasure of Timeout's company, and that of her friend, for lunch at a restaurant - Le Vieux Bistro - near Notre Dame. (It's now 7:25 p.m. here).
We took pictures; she'll post them when she gets home, unless she can find an internet cafe here and figure out how to do it. Anyway, we had a great time and I'm here to tell you she's a lovely person, but of course we all knew that! Is there a Guild member who is not? She even had her pearls with her.
Hope all are well.

The Republican Party is on the ropes in Iowa. Governor Tom Vilsack (D) is polling about 5 points ahead of challenger, Doug Gross. Congressman Greg Ganske is polling behind Senator Tom Harkin, and Congressman Jim Leach is against the wall. Leach prides himself on not taking any PAC money, not taking money from outside the state and not taking any personal contributions over $1000. The Congressman is going to have to open up his own checkbook if he is going to pull this one out.
Pubbies currently control both the House and the Senate in the State House. IF they are able to hang on to control, it will be by smaller margins.
There is still an opportunity to capture the Governor's office if we keep plugging away. It would be nice if we could get one last visit from GWB before the election.

Maryland's gun-record scandal-EDITORIAL October 21, 2002 True to form, Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, who has cynically sought to exploit the recent sniper attacks for political gain against Republican gubernatorial foe Robert Ehrlich, is already looking for someone else to blame for the latest fiasco to befall her gubernatorial campaign the revelation that Maryland this year failed to conduct background checks on hundreds of handgun buyers, mandated under the Brady Act. Given that Mrs. Townsend (annointed by Gov. Parris Glendening as the state's crime czar) is relentlessly pounding away at Mr. Ehrlich's congressional votes against some gun-control measures and touting her own support for "common sense" regulations like background checks, the combination of hypocrisy and buffoonery involved in this nascent scandal are mindboggling. [snip]
Hmmmmmmmmmm. Hoping Mr. Ehrlich pounds this home so this Kennedy will finally be pried from the government teat.

Be thankful when weeding you all in Iowa don't come across these pests!
Capt. Roy Brown, of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, September 23, 2002 shows the 11-foot bull alligator that tore off a man's arm and swallowed it at a north Florida botanical garden. The man was weeding a lily pond, standing in about 4 feet of water, when he apparently stepped on the 392-pound male alligator, Brown said. The aircraft carrier Constellation with 72 warplanes aboard will head for the Gulf on November 2, 2002, the latest piece in a quiet U.S. buildup off Iraq, Navy officials said on October 18. The 88,000-ton Constellation, seem in this undated file photo, will be the third U.S. carrier in the region. It was sticking to a schedule worked out at least nine months ago, and not being accelerated due to the Iraqi crisis officials said. (U.S. Navy (news - web sites)/Reuters)

Thanks for posting the photo of our new ship. We have some boxes going out in the next 2 weeks for Christmas. We need to plan about 6 weeks in advance for our stuff to get to the troops. I have been picking up Halloween candy like crazy for the soldiers. For many, this is their first Christmas away from their families.

Hello everyone. Just dropping by to say hello. The schools are having parent conference week, so the kids are home early.

I suppose you all already know this. There was an arrest in Richmond VA. and the impounding of a white mini van. They took 2 men into custody. What if they got the snipers?? WOO HOO! That would be great.
Rush is saying that Gray (out) Davis and the Republican Simon are tied in the polls, with Simon slightly ahead in the California Governor's race. Gee, I hope so.
And then there's this:

Former President Bill Clinton is introduced during the 10th Anniversary of the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame dinner, Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, in Little Rock, Ark. Clinton was inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame Saturday night. (Clinton, the first black president.)

Some gossip from la-la land...
Winona Ryder goes to trial this week
Winona Ryder's shoplifting trial, which begins this week, has forced L.A.'s district attorney, Steve Cooley, into the spotlight, too. He's being called heavy-handed for charging Ryder with three felony counts-he dropped a fourth, a drug charge-for allegedly shoplifting $6,000 in luxury goods from Saks Fifth Avenue's Beverly Hills store last December.
WHY THIS TACT? Possibly because his former boss, Gil Garcetti, lost at the polls for botching high-profile prosecutions like O. J. Simpson's. Attorneys for Robert Blake, arrested in April in the murder of his wife, claim their client's celeb status is working against him. "Blake is facing the ghost of the O.J. trial," says Loyola law professor Laurie Levenson. As for Ryder, it's common in L.A. for stars to take home, and then return, what they don't like-as long as the store has a credit card on file. A Ryder rep says Saks had the actress's info.

RE: Ryder and her alleged cc on file - wouldn't she still have to run the stuff by the clerk so they'd know what to charge to her account? Give me a break, no store lets stars just take a boatload of stuff out the door w/o knowing exactly down to the item what they're leaving with. That sounds like a Mark Geragos statement to me.
PS: I am in Raleigh-Durham this week and just got into the hotel (which has NO CNN, FOX, MSNBC, CNBC you name it in cable news, they don't carry it -- very bad "news" for a news junkie) and I'm watching all the political adds. Dole has a good one with Bush. Bowles is hammering her on her statement that the economic plan of the presidents is ok. I mean he's hammering her on that. She has a neg ad running on his family's business laying people off, but I think she has to come back with an ad that directly combat's irksome's slam on her economic stance.
And that idiot John Edwards is running an "I grew up in Robbins where it didn't matter if you were a dem or republican cause we're all americans so whoever you support, get out and vote." Makes him sound like he's all american apple pie. This guy is a mini-clinton in every sense of the word. We Guild ladies have got to start digging up the dirt on this jerk.
OK, that's the Carolina report. Have no idea what's happening nationally. E

Yes, that's our ship for Christmas. I contacted the USO and they told me that if we start shipping in the next couple of weeks, things should get there by Christmas. I figured that we would start shipping the first few weeks of November. I will go out the day after Halloween and grab up a bunch of candy for our boxes.
Lodwick is also a great candy spotter. I will hit Walmart first.
