In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of word for the day. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the word of the day; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....
raffish \RAF-ish,or RAYF-ish\, adjective:
raffishly; adverb
raffishness; noun
1. Characterized by or suggestive of flashy vulgarity, crudeness, or rowdiness; tawdry.
2. Marked by a carefree unconventionality or disreputableness; rakish.
3. Resembling, or having the character of, raff, or a raff; worthless; low.
4. Marked by smartness in dress and manners
We are told about Bacon's taste for raffish, lower-class lovers, his penchant for gambling and his almost complete disregard for money.
--Michiko Kakutani, "Portrait of a Portraitist Of a Century's Horrors," review of Francis Bacon: His Life and Violent Times, by Andrew Sinclair, New York Times,, December 14, 1993
[Probably from dialectal raff, rubbish, from Middle English raf, perhaps of Scandinavian origin.]. Date: 1801

In November 2000, New Yorkers rashly rushed to elect some
raffish rubbish to represent them. Can the rabble still be pleased?

That homesickness will go away. I know when I moved to AZ, I missed the ocean. Not that I ever went to the beach that much, but it was only three miles away. And you could smell the aroma of the ocean. I haven't had that feeling for a long time now.
You will find new things that will pique your interest. Just give it time.
I love the Saguaro cacti here.

I'm trying Slip. Every state has it's beauty and FL has it's good points. I guess I'm just a northwest kinda gal at heart. But I gave up my flannel shirts when I left.....
To: anniegetyourgun
I haven't worn a flannel shirt in two years. LOL! Nights get chilly by the ocean, and flannel keeps that chill out. Denim doesn't cut it.

i bought myself a flannel nightshirt with doggies on it last weekend. i found the cutest doggy stuff in Pgh. there was one store that i was completely nuts over and she has no website, no catalogue, nothing! i said how is my husband supposed to get my christmas presents here?? i am still disturbed that she is losing all sorts of revenue by not having a website. all you need is some tech savvy teenager and you could clean up!

Don't worry about xs.... she is just easily offended, and apparently I managed to chap her cheeks earlier in the week with some - IMO - innocent remarks.
In retrospect, I think her complaint was merely a ploy to get some cupcakes.
