In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of word for the day. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the word of the day; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....
raffish \RAF-ish,or RAYF-ish\, adjective:
raffishly; adverb
raffishness; noun
1. Characterized by or suggestive of flashy vulgarity, crudeness, or rowdiness; tawdry.
2. Marked by a carefree unconventionality or disreputableness; rakish.
3. Resembling, or having the character of, raff, or a raff; worthless; low.
4. Marked by smartness in dress and manners
We are told about Bacon's taste for raffish, lower-class lovers, his penchant for gambling and his almost complete disregard for money.
--Michiko Kakutani, "Portrait of a Portraitist Of a Century's Horrors," review of Francis Bacon: His Life and Violent Times, by Andrew Sinclair, New York Times,, December 14, 1993
[Probably from dialectal raff, rubbish, from Middle English raf, perhaps of Scandinavian origin.]. Date: 1801

this is akin to my telling xsteen that there is a nationwide conspiracy to drive me insane, by having people, in concert, get in my way and annoy me. They are all in it it together.
there is a similar move afoot to drive YOU insane, and it centers around the NJ senate race, and the NJSup ct. the NJ Dem party and the USSC are all in cahoots. deal with it.

their communication system is pretty amazing though, considering they have, in effect, set up a rolling roadblock situation on my normal path in NoVA.

Torricelli is not dead (being terminally ill, politically, does not count). He is not incapacitated (being ethically challenged does not count). He is not in jail (with his contributor David Chang, one of seven people who pleaded guilty to making illegal contributions to Torricelli). Were he any of those three there might be grounds for waiving the 51-day limit. But poll results that sadden Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle are not grounds. my fave part! you know what i miss. i miss jim traficant being able to speak to this!
