In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of word for the day. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the word of the day; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....
hegemony \he-jem-o-knee\, noun:
hegemonies; plural
hegemonic; adjective
hegemonism; noun
hegemonist; adjective
USAGE NOTE
Hegemony may be stressed on either the first or second syllable, though the pronunciation with stress on the second syllable may be winning out. Seventy-two percent of the Usage Panel prefers it.
1. The predominant influence, as of a state, region, or group, over another or others.
2. Leadership; preponderant influence or authority; -- usually applied to the relation of a government or state to its neighbors or confederates.
3. The domination of one state over its allies
This period in Greek history is called the Spartan hegemony, for although Sparta didn't rule the city -states of Greece as if it were an empire, Sparta did exercise considerable influence over the domestic and foreign decisions of these independent states: it exercised, then, hegemonic control over these states.
--The Spartan Hegemony; 404-371 BC,©1996, Richard Hooker
Etymology: Greek hEgemonia, from hEgemOn leader, from hEgeisthai to lead. Date: 1567

XS, what about pouring it through a coffee filter, if one is available at your office? That should certainly preclude even the smallest shard of glass from siphoning through.
Just a suggestion....

Some of the mountain tops have snow now. It was 39 about 6am this morning. We've had one or two frosts.
To: EODGUY
i never would have thought of that, but we don't have a coffee maker in our office. everyone buys the local swill. very kind of you to brainstorm for me, though!

Al Gore seemed caught by surprise when he was asked after an economic speech why he wasn't wearing his wedding ring.
"Because I've gained so much weight I couldn't get it off," Sounds like Al's gut has hegemony over the rest of him.....
To: CholeraJoe
now i like a nip in the air, but that seems a little too frosty for my pumpkins ; )

So instead the plan is to diminish US hegemony by spending zippo on defence and putting all your eggs in the UN basket. Structurally, the UN is a creature of the Cold War. It formalised the stalemate of East and West: it was designed to prevent rather than enable action; it tended towards inertia, which was no bad thing given the potentially catastrophic consequences of the alternative. But we no longer have a bipolar world, and so the vetoes only work one way to restrain the sole surviving superpower. Englands clergy have redefined the Christian concept of a just war to mean only one blessed by the Security Council, which is to say the governments of France, Russia and China: it will be left to two atheists and a lapsed Catholic to determine whether this is a war Christians can support. Even more perplexing, The Spectator feels the same way: our editorial last week declared that only UN authorisation could provide a justification for war. More genious by Mark Steyn, and he used the Word for the Day. Steyn alert
