In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of word for the day. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the word of the day; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....
hegemony \he-jem-o-knee\, noun:
hegemonies; plural
hegemonic; adjective
hegemonism; noun
hegemonist; adjective
USAGE NOTE
Hegemony may be stressed on either the first or second syllable, though the pronunciation with stress on the second syllable may be winning out. Seventy-two percent of the Usage Panel prefers it.
1. The predominant influence, as of a state, region, or group, over another or others.
2. Leadership; preponderant influence or authority; -- usually applied to the relation of a government or state to its neighbors or confederates.
3. The domination of one state over its allies
This period in Greek history is called the Spartan hegemony, for although Sparta didn't rule the city -states of Greece as if it were an empire, Sparta did exercise considerable influence over the domestic and foreign decisions of these independent states: it exercised, then, hegemonic control over these states.
--The Spartan Hegemony; 404-371 BC,©1996, Richard Hooker
Etymology: Greek hEgemonia, from hEgemOn leader, from hEgeisthai to lead. Date: 1567

"should i invite you to come and pan for gold in my thermos?" === incmg msg ===
Message: brain to groin
Priority: High
Re: stockings
Previous messages indicate xs is not wearing stockings, and 'pan for gold in my thermos' may be a euphamism for mutual sexual gratification.
Recommend immediate acceptance of invitation.
=== msg ends ===
Why, Mrs. Robinson, are you trying to seduce me?

The dimocrats'
hegemony over the Judicial Branch of government is obvious*...and dangerous. Thus, we should not hold our collective breath waiting for Patty Leaky Leahy to move any of GW's nominees out of the Judiciary Committee.
