I've been wondering when the parsing of Ed and Lois' words would begin. They're still working on those articles from Jun 5-14.
To: sandude
Did you really find anything in that interview? I watched most of it, but stepped away during commercial and came back late.
It just looked to me that Ashleigh, bless her investigative heart, did much of the talking. Ed looked older than usual, Lois was clearly in pain but dignified.
My watching of the Smarts was overshadowed by my impression of the deep sadness on the face of that lady who was the mother of Amber Hagerman. (Did I get her last name right? I didn't follow that case. Poor, poor kid.)
To: Devil_Anse
my question now is: the alleged parole violation was for alcohol, right? how did detectives have legal access to grill ricci if the parole violation was unrelated to the smart case?

I think there was more than one violation alleged. As far as I know, they all stood, and apparently his parole was revoked for more than one violation.
How did they get access? Apparently they just read him his rights, asked if he would talk to them, and he said yes.

fact: father of victim had an unusual relationship with known excon and used tax-avoiding and illegal means to pay off that same excon..... That isn't a "fact", but mere speculation on your part. You are also missing the obvious i.e. that Ricci wanted the Jeep, or are you assuming that Ed searched high and low to find a laborer that would take the jeep off his hands?
How about your ignoring Ricci's extensive criminal record and M.O. which are also facts? Your attempt at moral equivalency between Ed "possibly" not paying social security taxes and Ricci who actually shot a police officer and robbed banks with a weapon is pathetic.
Is it Ed's percieved wealth and "huge" home that irritates you so much?

Did anyone else watch the Banfield interview tonight? I've been wondering when the parsing of Ed and Lois' words would begin. Of course I found nothing controversial but that would be no surprise to some of you. I wasn't able to watch it but recorded it in case we need it to offset the anticipated attack.

Utah County pair charged with starving their childrenI don't get it. Are you suggesting the Riccis were also child abusers by association? Or some other people in that state?

"fact: father of victim had an unusual relationship with known excon and used tax-avoiding and illegal means to pay off that same excon....."
Cherry, how are these *facts*?!
From what we know of Ed's relationship with Ricci, it was not that unusual IMHO. Yours is an opinion, too, BTW.
The tax avoidance/illegal payment scenario was made up out of whole cloth by someone on this thread, wasn't it? Is that your opinion? On what do you base it? Sheer speculation? I hope not, because that would not be a sign that you are an intelligent life form.

I don't get it. Are you suggesting the Riccis were also child abusers by association? Or some other people in that state? THANK YOU. Thank you for asking why that article was posted on the Smart case thread. I was longing to ask why, also, but...the ways of Bella are mysterious, we are expected to simply accept them, and we "have no right" to ask WHY!!
And if one asks a question, one is "nosy" or "writing a book." AS IF this were not a discussion forum!!!
I must tell you, though, that your questions will probably remain unanswered
To: Jolly Green
If, as is presumed by some, Ed was somehow compensating Ricci in a way which was under the IRS radar, shouldn't we also be asking whether Ricci reported ALL this "under the table" compensation to the income tax people?
To: cookiedough
The tax avoidance/illegal payment scenario was made up out of whole cloth by someone on this thread, wasn't it? I agree with you on this. Also, isn't it interesting how such speculation and innuendo never, ever includes even the slightest suggestion that RICCI might also have done something illegal tax-wise, such as maybe not report the compensation which Ed supposedly paid him in this sneaky and "illegal" way?
To: cherry
When you read my post about my housepainter, you seem to have been so intent upon reaching your conclusion that I had "not been very streetwise for a former DA," that you forgot to read the part in which I said, that many of these subcontractor guys and their ilk almost always INSIST on receiving cash, b/c they are chronically short of it.
To: Devil_Anse
Now, DA, calm down ... you know Ricci thought he was exempt from having to follow the law. His record is de facto proof of that!
If Ricci did not make quarterly tax payments on his self-employment income, that doesn't mean he was more likely to have something to do with Liz' abduction.
If Ed didn't report the expense and pay the associated employment taxes, that tends to show that he did away with his own child.
Do you see the logic in this? Not!
To: Devil_Anse
You feel the need to tell me that you have "no reason...to answer any" of my questions--sounds exactly like something Varina says from time to time.Truth and candor bothers you?
To: Devil_Anse
shouldn't we also be asking whether Ricci reported ALL this "under the table" compensation to the income tax people? How deep do you think you can bury someone who's already laid to rest?
To: varina davis
Oh--so that's it. It would take the death of some one of the Smart men, in order for you to acquit him of incest?

Okay, um, Cookiedough, now give me that again...
If Ricci did not make quarterly payments on his self-employment income, that doesn't mean he was more likely to have something to do with Liz' abduction.
If Ed didn't report the expense and pay the associated employment taxes, that tends to show that he did away with his own child.
OH! I get it!! The above were approved jury instructions for the trial of Ricci in the court of Varina, Bella, and other Ricci-lovers?
To: Devil_Anse
Oh--so that's it. It would take the death of some one of the Smart men, in order for you to acquit him of incest? What the hell are you talking about! You're really starting to exceed reasonable limits of debate.
To: varina davis
I don't understand why you come on a discussion forum day after day, Varina, when you claim or imply that you "haven't said" this, or "never said" that, or "never implied," etc.
It's very hard to debate with someone who doesn't seem to want to make a single declarative sentence about this case.
