Louis St. Laurent and the Sense of Things

In the early days of television
when Prime Minister
Louis St. Laurent promised the people
he would appear in their parlours
like someone peeking through a magic window
Montrealers hurried home from work
to change their clothes
for fear of being seen by him
in everyday.

...

and these people
their hearts beating quick as caught sheep
as this "bon pere de famille"
appeared
lighting the way they saw themselves going
in that time at that very place
when Louis St. Laurent paid his visit
and they may well have asked
"Do you see me Mr. Prime Minister?
I am the one
in the green chair.
Welcome to my home."
