...Thanks alot, Carol Roberts :^(
Miss Marple and lysie ... the Irish Travelers ... sometimes called the Irish Tinkers ... began immigrating here around, I think, the 1840s.
A tightly knit group ... they settled in Virginia, N. Carolina, Texas ... and another state I can not recall.
They keep very much to themselves ... originally making a living breeding and selling horses and mules ... oxen, too.
To this day the husbands are migrants and are gone for extended periods of time .. leaving, of course, the women home alone with an uncertain future. Parishes are often only alerted to their pressence when there has been a death in the family ... for they require the Priest ... though the services are slightly different ...
A very strange group of people, I will say ... and I would like to strap that woman in a chair and smack her about the head myself, I would.
Yes, Jemian ... I was thinking about your special connection to oldngray ... the thought always comforts me, it does...
kayak ... missing you ... I am sorry it rained!
And rightfully so, since a section of the school roof is open to the air, although not a classroom or hall!
I am interested in the Irish Travelers, illstillbe. A couple of years ago there were som people here who were convinced that X42 was a member of the group, which would account for a lot of things, I think.
We most normally encounter gypsies here, although thee have been reports of the Travelers, usually in driveway repaving scams on the elderly.
I am thrashing the thread unto death ... beating it to a bloody pulp, I am ...
Oh! The humanityyyy!
*wink*
wjc would never join the group ... no payday in his future there ... they are always broke ... it was reported that the reason cameras had captured her was because she made an attempt at a cash exchange at Khol's and, when refused, went nuts ... security was alerted ... also the women are, at least, quite faithful to their husbands ... so he would lose there as well ...
Did you know there is also a Scottish Travelers group? Indeed!
LOL ... Guennie ... we were all over the place!
Dog first spotted the storm and told Miss Marple to turn on the weather station .... I wasn't here ... and when I came back a thread had started ...
ohioWfan ... and Molly were also in our *prayers* ... and wait!!!
Purdue Pete! Oh my goodness! ...
I hope she is OK?!
Purdue ... you are requested to post at the foxhole as soon as you can ... I am now officially worried and I don't like it ....
I see you have poked your head in! I am glad to see you!!
LOL! A bird got inside my house yesterday morning! I am scared of birds! ... It was flipping and flirting all about the ceiling ... came close to the fan ... BWAK! ... finally ... it wended its way out to the sun porch ... I closed both doors ... opened the outside door and it figured out how to excape.
Well ... I am sure you needed to know this ...
On her behalf, I've been in touch with an Anthropology professor from the University of the South. This prof has done a lot of research into the Scotch-Irish immigrants. She's also recently written a paper on Irish holy wells.
I only have a small bit of personal interest. I recently learned that I have one Irish ancestor. He immigrated from Tipperary County, Ireland in 1849, got married, had a child, and apparently died in a mining accident.
There's one section devoted to this group, their customs, religious background and preferences, plus maybe political impact.
The other sections deal with the Cavaliars, the Quakers, and of course, the Puritans. Fascinating book.
Yes, Guenevere, Tales from Canada would be most welcome!
Nita, Travel safely!
Not sure....
Jane, don't forget the Civil War Series tonite...
If you didn't come back online, I was going to tape it for you.
