Look at how tolerant the school district is -- diversity in mentorship programs means they can't discriminate against queers and child molesters.

Mother of raped boy files claim against schools
(AP) TACOMA -- The mother of an 11-year-old boy whose designated mentor was convicted of raping him has filed a $20 million claim against the Sumner School District, the first step toward a potential lawsuit.
A discipline plan established by McAlder Elementary School teachers and administrators for the troubled boy in September 1997 says janitor Larry Lee Eche volunteered to serve as his mentor, according to the claim, which was filed Wednesday.
Court documents show that Eche was convicted of contributing to the delinquency of a minor in 1976, and a drug possession charge in Alaska in 1995 was dropped after he became a police informant.
The mother's lawyer, Monte Hester, said school officials were careless in deciding to use Eche as a mentor.
"Something has to be done to make sure it doesn't happen to another youngster," Hester said.
According to the claim, the mother notified school officials when Eche began spending time alone with her son at his home and at a motel, only to have her warnings ignored.
She then obtained a restraining order against Eche and the school system and later transferred her son to another school.
In 1999, Eche pleaded guilty to first- and second-degree rape of the child over the previous two years. He is serving a 13-year prison sentence.
School officials have 60 days to respond.

Hot air balloonist flies over Mount Rainier
(AP) ASHFORD -- Once you fly over Mount Rainier in a hot air balloon, what's your next move?
That was a key question for a Kent balloon company operator after he completed the three-hour, 20-minute cross-Rainier flight from Spanaway to Yakima County this week.
The flight, reaching an altitude of 20,600 feet, was the first balloon flight over the14,411-foot mountain, said Vic Johnson, the pilot and co-owner of Go Lightly Balloon Co.
Other balloonists said they had never heard of anyone making the flight.

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) - Israel planted its flag in Yasser Arafat's compound Saturday, and shell bursts shook his offices, chipping away at the building in an ever-tightening siege designed to make the Palestinian leader surrender militants or leave into exile.
Send Peter Jennings in to negotiate!

Did you read far enough to get to a traveler's website?
There are bizarre goings on in our country. Perhaps we should rethink this anyone born here is automatically a citizen thing, and make everyone do what the legal immigrants who become citizens do. If you don't want to be a citizen - GTF outta here.

Not yet, but I saw a piece on 60 minutes a few years ago. Wierd bunch.... seems to go around pretty much undetected.

Arafat is lucky to still be alive after all these years. Maybe the concussions from the tank shells will trigger a heart attack.

Thanks for that news item about the balloonist going over Mt. Rainier...I would have like to have seen that...I dont know that I would like to go up in a hot air balloon, but I know my husband would love to try that...
He mentioned again this morning, that unless something does come up, we will be going up to Mt. Rainier, next weekend, tho we have not decided if we will go camping, or just go up for the day....
I love camping up at Mt. Rainier, but dont know if we feel like dragging out the tent and all the camping supplies...
I guess we will just wait until later in the week, and see how we feel about things...
