the other day, my niece needed me to take her son Christopher to school for her... he is 5 and in kindergarten--and extremely bright... he had just begun last Monday... when i went to pick him up, his mother went to her doctor's appointment, so Christopher, my two sons and i hung around until it was time for me take him to school... as we were waiting, i asked Christopher how he liked his school, and he said he liked it a lot--he said, "it's way better than homeschool!" i told him i didn't agree, and told him some of the nice things about homeschool... anyway--four hours later, when he returned home from school, i asked him what he did... he showed me the craft he did with the colors black and brown (the two colors they learned that day) and told me they sang songs... i asked him what songs? and he said, "you know, 'Twinkle Twinkle,' and 'Mary Had a Little Lamb.'" i said, "but don't you already know those songs? and i know you know your colors." and he said, "yes, i do--but there are other kids in the class who don't." and that is but one of the many reasons homeschool is better than public/private... my kids don't have to wait for other kids to catch up before they go on to learn new things... and my kids don't have to worry about being left behind because they didn't quite understand something before the class moves on... i didn't tell Christopher that... but i wish his mother were there when we had our conversation...

Where did Christopher learn that public school was better than homeschool? How would he know?

"it's way better than homeschool!"
My question as well, why would he say that? Was he homeschooled at 4?

One of the best reasons to homeschool is that it is such an efficient way to learn. My eighth grader just finished his schoolwork. It's 1 p.m. Last year, he was always done by noon. He has the whole rest of the day and evening to himself. No homework. It's done.

We have had similar issues with our daughter we homeschool. She wants to go to school now, because of friends at her church. I made it an effort to go to a co-op now, and have a school like setting with a controlled group. It's also just for 1 class. The class is about 45 minutes, so it's not too long for her either. Where I live, in public school doesn't seem to be a joke. What they seem to expect from them is harsh. My friend is a teacher, and told me that her class doesn't have recess. They won't make the end of the year requirements. This is for the 1st graders! They work all day, and their only break is lunch. I think they are expecting too much, and pushing the children way to hard. I get so much more done with homeschooling, and my children have more play time with other kids. To be honest, my childrens days are mostly socializing, and activites. My children not only meet the standard, but they exceed it in morality, manners, and most important, their relationship with my husband, me, and the Lord. I am really enjoying it as well! I don't have to worry about getting my child to school, picking her up, going over homework, planning vacations, and all the other things. She also has a wonderful group of friends. Thanks for your story!
