IN THE EARLY DAYS OF LEMHI COUNTY, from the August 8, 2002, edition of The Recorder Herald.

50 Years Ago - 1952
* A Drive-in Theatre is being erected at Cobalt on land belonging to Tom Flynn. J.T. Latimore of Arco started work Tuesday on the outdoor theater and stated that he hoped to have a trial run sometime next week or the week following. Mr. Latimore, who owns and operates the Drive-in Theatre at Arco, stated that he planned to install one hundred car speakers at present with additions made later if necessary.
* Nita Silbaugh, ten year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Silbaugh received a painful cut on her leg Tuesday afternoon, while riding her bicycle on the bar with a group of friends.
* FOR SALE -- 188 acres deeded, 50 acres of hay, 30 to 40 acres in good pasture, balance good creek bottom pasture, good 4 room home, plenty of free water. Priced for $25,000 with good terms. This is a good clean little ranch.

60 Years Ago - 1942
* To conserve tires, the American Legion and Auxiliary will hold their annual picnic at Island park instead of Seventeen Mile. The picnic will be Sunday, August 9, beginning at 1 o'clock. As another war time measure, each person is being asked to bring his own sugar. Mrs. John Kapp and Mrs. Ralph Geumlek are in charge of arrangements.
*MEAT SPECIALS-- Beef Pot Roast, lb. 22 Cents, Tender Steaks, lb, 32 cents; Ground Beef, made fresh daily, 2 lbs, 43 cents; Dry Salt Bacon, lb. 21 cents; Veal Steak, lb. 29 cents.
* The ranch of Dr. and Mrs. McFarland is largely supplying the local market with apricots.

70 Years Ago - 1932
* Miss Eletha and Leila Bradley left Thursday morning on a camping trip to the Bighorn Crags, one of the roughest, wildest and most remote sections of the Idaho wilderness. They drove to the Pahsimeroi valley in a car and outfitted with saddle horses and a pack horse there. The balance of the journey is being made over mountain trails. They have a complete camping equipment with them and plenty of fishing tackle and are both experienced in lore of the woods.
* Frank Glennon and Hans Lausen started their stamp mill near Gibbonsville the first of the week. They have five stamps in operation.

80 Years Ago - 1922
* Thomas Palmer, old Lemhi citizen, fell from a ladder from a new house he was building at Gibbonsville last Saturday, sustaining a broken collar bone in the accident. Dr. Wright was called from Salmon. Mr. Palmer is advanced in age, being beyond fore score but his robust general health is relied upon soon to pull him through. The fall was a bad one and but for striking upon a board resting on trestles it might have been fatal.
* FOR SALE--151-1/2 acres with farm implements, stock and crops. All goes for $12,000 if sold at once. CHARLES HARDER. North Fork.

90 Years Ago - 1912
* Last Friday the one year old baby of Mrs. Stahl had the misfortune to fall from a horse on which she had been placed, breaking the bones of her right arm. The injured member was set and the little one left feeling as comfortable as possible.
* The Salmon Ditch Co. is cutting the trench for the new water main to be laid along Hope avenue, near the Catholic church. Most of the trenching on the west side is done, and the steel pipe is being placed therein.
* Al Pritchard and L.C. Potter left Tuesday morning with their burro pack train for upper Carmen creek where they will spend a week fishing.

100 Years Ago - 1902
* BORN--on Friday July 25, 1902. To the wife of O.T. Clough, a son.
* Allen Merritt returned Saturday from Conlee's camp where he went to survey the Indian creek road. He made the survey from the "Zigzag" trail down. He reports work on the road progressing well, one mile and a half being completed. There are ten men at work.
* Fred Pattee and Charlie Snook were in town yesterday. They brought in Art McClain who was badly bruised from the day before, the result of a runaway while he was raking hay on the Snook ranch. He was thrown from the seat and caught in the rake teeth and dragged some distance before he was released. His injuries were not serious.

110 Years Ago - 1892
* Missing.

* * * * * * * * * *

The idea of a drive in at Cobalt seems funny to me...this is a mining town that has its ups and downs depending on the need for cobalt, apparently--not to mention environmental issues, etc. I can't imagine 100 residents, let alone vehicles, up there to go to a movie!!

I thought the meat prices interesting--especially in light of what Valerie occasionally posts about good meat prices in Texas.

I'd really like to know some more about the ladies 70 years ago who took off to visit the 'wilderness'. Hey, Cuttn...can you tell us anything about the Bighorn Crags.....is that in the Sawtooth range?

While you're at it, Cuttn....do you know what 'stamp mills' are? I haven't a clue.

Guess we can tell what Prentice is goin' to be doing when he's 80!! LOL....old Mr. Palmer!!!

Cuttn mentioned land issues as being important out West--and he is so right. In the 100 Years Ago section, Indian creek road is discussed. This area has been involved in what to me, a newcomer, seems like nothing but lawsuits--and fedgov involvement....back when Babbling Bruce Babbitt was weilding his ax, there was some controversial regs written up regarding certain types of roads (I want to say the section in regs is what the thing is called, i.e. 2746 roads/rights of way/public access...whatever)...and trying to establish actual dates of when these types of roads were placed in service is extremely important because fedgov wants to wipe out as many of these roads as possible.

There are a number of families back up in that area that have used Indian creek road access to get to their own places, and I believe the public also to go intot he forests, whether for hunting, berry gathering, wood gathering, etc. This is another area Cuttn is probably well versed in.

And, as holds true still today---farm work is hazardous work.

Thanks Dee. * Nita Silbaugh, ten year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Silbaugh received a painful cut on her leg Tuesday afternoon, while riding her bicycle on the bar with a group of friends.

Note to self: Do not ride bicycle on bar with any passengers.

I haven't watched the news yet today... had the TV on TLC with all the makeover shows. I like to see the befores and afters, but the comments are always the same - "life unscripted"? I don't think so.
"I can hardly wait to see her."
"I'm just so excited to see her."
"She is going to be so shocked."

Now they are showing A Dating Story in Portland, and the guy looks so much like a guy I dated in Portland about 3 years ago -- but it's not him. We went out several times, but we lived 100 miles apart, and then I moved to Texas and the distance really got unreasonable. *L* He was always obsessing over a previous girlfriend, so it wasn't ever serious between us - but he was a nice guy.

They are going to play golf - the TV is in another room, so I have to go back and forth. This guy on TV is so much like Scott, the way he looks and the way he is, but his SUV is dark blue and Scott's is white. Their voices are even a lot alike. It's so weird.
I'm sure no one is obsessing over me now. *L* I wouldn't be obsessing over him if I didn't see this TV show.

Thank goodness, NO! No CDs of songs -- but lots of photos I've taken are stored on CDs. Won't play well in car stereos, I'm sure. I don't look anything like the girl on this show.
