AMERICA - The Right Way!! (Day 566) [Remember the Trade Center!!]
Various News Sources and FReepers | August 9, 2002 | All of Us

Posted on 08/09/2002 4:00:05 AM PDT by Chairman_December_19th_Society

We will not tire, we will not falter and we will not fail! [President Bush]

Good Morning!! Do not let the victims of the attacks on New York and Washington, nor the brave members of our Nation's military who have given their lives to protect our freedom, die in vain!!

Another key witness, a friend of Martha Stewart, is cooperating with investigators. Mariana Pasternak, a real estate broker from Westport, CT, was on the plane with Martha Stewart when she sold 4,000 shares of ImClone stock.

WorldCom finds that billions of dollars more have turned up as missing.

Iraqi President Saddam Hussein expressed hope that Britain would not join the United States in attacking his country.

And Tipper Gore, according to Fox News, tried to get free tickets for her, her husband, and the entire Gore staff, but were rebuffed. They were told they would have to pay face value for tickets - $77. Tipper passed.

For AMERICA - The Right Way, I remain yours in the Cause, the Chairman.

Hi Molly. That was hilarious about the guy who accidentally printed the "Wicked Bible" (though obviously not so hilarious to him). I guess printers' errors can be pretty irritating to writers. Here's a poem by my favorite writer, P. G. Wodehouse. Enjoy this waste of bandwidth.

Printer’s Error

As o’er my latest book I pored,
Enjoying it immensely,
I suddenly exclaimed ‘Good Lord!’
And gripped the volume tensely.
“Golly!” I cried. I writhed in pain.
‘They’ve done it on me once again!’
And furrows creased my brow.
I’d written (which I thought quite good)
‘Ruth, ripening into womanhood,
Was now a girl who knocked men flat
And frequently got whistled at’,
And some vile, careless, casual gook
Had spoiled the best thing in the book
By printing ‘not’
(Yes, ‘not’, great Scott!)
When I had written ‘now’.

On murder in the first degree
The Law, I knew, is rigid:
Its attitude, if A kills B,
To A is always frigid.
It counts it not a trivial slip
If on behalf of authorship
You liquidate compositors.
This kind of conduct it abhors
And seldom will allow.
Nevertheless, I deemed it best
And in the public interest
To buy a gun, to oil it well,
Inserting what is called a shell,
And go and pot
With sudden shot
This printer who had printed ‘not’
When I had written ‘now’.

I tracked the bounder to his den
Through private information:
I said, ‘Good afternoon’, and then
Explained the situation:
‘I’m not a fussy man,’ I said.
‘I smile when you put “rid” for “red”
And “bad” for “bed” and “hoad” for “head”
And “bolge” instead of “bough”
When “wone” appears in lieu of “wine”
Or if you alter “Cohn” to “Schine”,
I never make a row.
I know how easy errors are.
But this time you have gone too far
By printing “not” when you knew what
I really wrote was “now”.
Prepare,’ I said, ‘to meet your God
Or, as you’d say, your Goo or Bod,
Or possibly your Gow.’

A few weeks later into court
I came to stand my trial.
The Judge was quite a descent sort.
He said, ‘Well, cocky, I’ll
Be passing sentence in a jiff,
And so, my poor unhappy stiff,
If you have anything to say,
Now is the moment. Fire away.
You have?’
I said, ‘And how!
Me lud, the facts I don’t dispute.
I did, I own it freely, shoot
This printer through the collar stud.
What else could I have done, me lud?
He’d printed “not” ...’
The judge said, ‘What!
When you had written “now”?
God bless my soul! Gadzooks!’ said he.
‘The blighters did that once to me.
A dirty trick, I trow.
I hereby quash and override
The jury’s verdict. Gosh!’ he cried.
‘Give me your hand. Yes, I insist,
You splendid fellow! Case dismissed.’
(Cheers, and a Voice ‘Wow-wow!’)

A statue stands against the sky,
Lifelike and rather pretty.
Twas recently erected by
The P.E.N. committee.
And many a passer-by is stirred,
For on the plinth, if that’s the word,
In gold letters you may read
‘This is the man who did the deed.
His hand set to the plough,
He did not sheathe the sword, but got
A gun at great expense and shot
The human blot who’d printed “not”
When he had written “now”.
He acted with no thought of self,
Not for advancement, not for pelf,
But just because it made him hot
To think the man had printed “not”
When he had written “now”.’

P. G. Wodehouse

SY, that is a scream! Humor is never a waste of bandwidth.

I'm pinging Jane, 'cause she's a Wodehouse fan.

The book I referenced above is fascinating, BTW.

Anything new on the job front...about sharing that one position?

I'm very happy to hear that our own Miss Marple is also a Wodehouse fan. Wodehouse, by the way, was a fan of Agatha Christie, I'm pretty sure.

Anything new on the job front...about sharing that one position? I talked to someone in the state about it and they said there are no state guidelines about teacher/student ratio in ESL classes, but there will be eventually. My wife says that there are fewer than she thought yesterday because some have sort of passed out of the classes so now she's expecting just 37 and given that her job is mandated but not budgeted, I'm pretty sure that the district will do all they can to keep hiring costs down.

I talked to one other person in the state department of education today and it was the same old stupidity regurgitated. I cannot accept their thinking that I need a bunch of education (brainwashing) courses to make me competent to help these immigrant kids learn English. On one hand they're practically begging for teachers because the need is so great and when you step up to the plate they say, "Sorry, we didn't have you in mind."

Since the firemen booed her, she has gone all out to 'win' them back. I swear, this woman has scales for sure.

Yes, I am a huge Wodehouse fan. Those are fiction books well worth reading, being as how they have the capacity to make me laugh out loud when reading them. I also like the settings (similar to Christie's work) in the England between the two wars.

I may dust off an old Wodehouse collection I have and do some reading tonight. Thanks for the reminder!

Scales, a smell, and as gleefully reported here a few years back--hairy toes! YUCK! Hope that visual does not ruin anyone's dinner... Well, gotta split for da weekend, more home improvement on the schedule for tomorrow, fix a fridge, plumbing and drywall on tap for a nice lady. Good to keep in practice, I tell ya what!

Everybody have a great weekend!

It was a good verdict.....now to watch and see if they retry him....this is a poor county....not much money to wage losing battles in courtroom. People are not going to like them wasting all that money again...

Jane, I'm so glad to learn that you are also a Wodehouse fan. I knew there were plenty of reasons to like you!

I just returned from the library with "The World of Mr. Mulliner," a collection of 42 (all?) Mr. Mulliner stories. I have read perhaps half of them, but one delightful thing about being a Wodehouse fan is that there seems to always be more to read. But considering that he wrote over 90 novels and more than 270 short stories which means just about a lifetime of reading to get through the whole output, I find myself re-reading several times my favorite stories and books.

My wife and I have been Wodehouse fans since 1989 when we were in China and some thoughtful soul sent us a paperback copy of one of the collections of Jeeves short stories. Since then we've been hooked. We used to meet with other Wodehouse fans in Singapore and very nearly started the Singapore Chapter of the Wodehouse Society, but somehow never got around to making it official and getting registered.

I've recently been trying to rebuild my collection and managed to find "The Mating Season" at a library sale in NC and someone from our Wodehouse newsgroup (alt.fan.wodehouse) is giving away some of his books and is sending me two hardbacks ("Full Moon" and "Leave it to Psmith"). I will have to remember to pass on Wodehousia when it comes my way through the newsgroup. Here's one for starters:
