A party of 22 searchers were spread out on the side of the canyon east of Salt Lake City when some of them spotted a man in a white T-shirt and white baseball cap between 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. One of the searchers called to the man, who ran and hid in the underbrush, then several searchers heard at least two gunshots.
Searcher Matt Duvem said late Thursday that he watched the man from a ridge about a mile away, and the "guy just paced back and forth . . . I assumed he was waiting for night." Duvem said he heard two shots in rapid succession, then another seven sporadic shots.
Another searcher who gave his name only as Chad said he saw some footprints, followed them and saw the man, who appeared to be trying to obscure his own prints on a trail. Chad said he kept his distance but watched the man for about 30 minutes. In the meantime, he radioed to his companions to call the authorities.
About a dozen Salt Lake County Sheriff's deputies arrived within the hour and established a perimeter around the area where the man was sighted. A helicopter with infrared equipment capable of detecting body heat was called in, as were search dogs. The man remained at large at press time.

Chad wasn't the only one that saw this guy and heard the gunshots.

You didn't miss it. I couldn't find transcripts at all.
There is a reference to the show from SLC from Google, Friday night 7/5/02:
"Tune in for a special edition of Larry King Live broadcast from Salt Lake City, Utah. It's been one month since the mysterious June 5 kidnapping of 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart. Her parents, Ed and Lois Smart, grandparents Charles and Dorotha Smart and several other members of their family, talk about their agonizing ordeal, the ongoing investigation and the faith that keeps them hopeful that she'll be found alive."
Grandparents I had forgotten. So, that takes me back to square one - it must have been one of the out-of-doors interviews in front of the LDS church. That we'll never find, unless someone has taped it.

"We believe we have an understanding of this suspect and, it is very possible we have already interviewed, or will very soon interview (him)," Dinse said as he updated the investigation that had previously been characterized by police as frustrating and showing little progress.
"I think it is someone who had access to that neighborhood, who had access to the residence. That doesn't mean inside (the family); that could mean someone on the outside, but it is somebody who has spent some time in and around that neighborhood," Dinse said, looking straight into the television cameras.
The characteristics of the likely suspect were developed with the assistance of FBI behavior experts, often called "profilers" by the media.

And if he is mentally or emotionally unbalanced AND related to a family VIP or community VIP, it would possibly make the whole scenario even stickier.
To: jengaio
Plus this chimerical mentally-challenged subject put together a multiple-accomplice plan that SLCLE and the FBI can't crack....?Seriously doubt there was a "multiple-accomplice plan."

I'm so glad you said that.

Lakey, do you think it's possible the alleged kidnapper is known to the family and they think he and Liz are holed up somewhere in the state (possibly even in the community)?
And, the family does not want to trigger any hostility toward Liz by the alleged abductor (thinking he has a weapon), which is why every statement is so carefully parsed?
And, that's why Ed Smart has decided just in the past couple of weeks to publicly focus on Ricci as a possible suspect (even though he absolutely refrained from it early on), to let the alleged kidnapper think the heat is off him?

Missed it. I just hope someday we know what all the secrecy is all about. Jeeesh!! Interesting questions Carol McKinley asked. I hadn't heard about the tapping MK either, strange.

Like varina says, spore, this could be "sticky."
Didn't see her tonight, but saw Boylan one time & she impressed me greatly. Few people pay such close attention to questioning. I'd love to see her in action.

Wait, I don't understand.... What about Ricci, Remington, et al?What about them? Not sure what you don't understand. Even a mentally/emotionally challenged person is often functionable enough to drive, make decisions, etc.
As for Ricci and friends, they may have been in the right places at the wrong times, thus inviting LE inquiries leading to their incarceration.

Last time I saw Jeanne Boylan she didn't seem comfortable talking about the case so I'm not surprised she tried to steer the conversation to areas that are better advertising for her. She said she had been on vacation and was out of touch with what was going on in the case. She can't answer any questions anyway and it has to be uncomfortable for anyone dodging questions. The Smart case is old business for her and I think she will ride out her 15 minutes of interview requests trying to lead the conversations to aspects of her career she wants to discuss, not the Smart case.
