Re: new Gateway. I purchased a Gateway last year. It was my third, no fourth puter. It was great. Then one day, about 6 or 8 weeks after the warranty expired, the puter expired. I found no sympathy at all from Gateway. "The techs" there know absolutely nothing about what they are talking about. The fact of the matter is they sell junk. I do not mean to rain on your parade. They sell utter crap. I have friends who know such things. I was warned not to buy it. I did it anyhow. I am so sorry. When the plastic cooling fan failed and ultimately melted, it caused my hard drive to over heat. When the hard drive failed I lost 9 years of important data. I lost over 2000 mp3`s, 100`s of pics, my address book, and my personal journals. I lost more that I can say. It is a shame what they sell. It is revolting. My advice to you and all. if you have things that you deem precious, Back up. Back up. back up. Did I mention back up? I am not so bitter. After all I have been puting for a very long time. I never believed that the character of Companies could be so very corrupt. My other advice..." Do not ever buy a Gateway". Find a geeky kid who likes to tinker. You will do so much better. Do I sound bitter? I am not bitter...nah not me...not bitter....

Thanks (I guess) for that word of caution -- albeit too late -- about Gateway. We just came back to the US a month ago and a friend of ours who is 100% in the computer field recommended we buy either Dell or Gateway. We first looked at Dell, but Gateway had a slightly better offer, we thought. We got their most basic model and hope it lasts for a year or so, then we'll pass it on to the kids and hopefully get something better.

Regarding the stuff you can lose on your computer, I've been there and done that. In January my laptop crashed and I lost a ton of stuff. About a year before, though, I had a virus and a friend of mine was able to save a lot so I actually just lost a year's worth of stuff. Still, it was a royal pain and I have actually lost quite a bit that never was saved properly. This one came with a CD writer so I plan to be rabid about backing things up. I will take your warning to heart and Lord willing will not have the same experience you did.
