Aliens travel billions of miles to reach another civilization. When they arrive instead of contacting centers of civilization -- our big cities -- they go to the countryside and make patterns in crops. Then they travel billions of miles back to their own planet.
Well you see, they're very andvanced, and their propulsion systems let them do the round-trip in about thirty minutes. The aliens have nothing to *learn* from us: they just draw crop circles during recess (kids!) for their amusement.

Maybe they're only two inches tall and this is their way of communicating important messages like "take me to your leader (after this anal probe - yeehaw!!!)".

Well you see, they're very andvanced, and their propulsion systems let them do the round-trip in about thirty minutes. For one, that MIGHT be true. Additionally, we don't know exactly how far they'd have to travel, or what they'd be traveling through..
In other words, they don't have to be SPACE travelers.
And they MAY have been in touch with us throughout OUR own history, guiding events for some reason of THEIR own.
