I planted mine in the spring , when the ground was unlikely to freeze again, but in Colorado that is quite late. I have also heard that they do well if the bulbs are planted in the fall.

We plant our bulbs here in the fall Libby. They seem to do better in the spring. Seems weird but that's the way it works. btw your picture from yesterday was very nice. The only thing I have ever seen of Colorado is the Denver Airport. I did not like the Denver Airport. Everybody seemed so mad.
