Iraqi natives are sentenced for buying bogus licenses
Saturday, July 13, 2002
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
PITTSBURGH -- Three Iraqi natives living in Michigan and Washington state avoided prison time, but will spend three years on probation for buying bogus Pennsylvania licenses to transport hazardous materials as part of a license-for-bribes scheme.
Hatef al-Atabi, 26, of Detroit, Mustafa Al-Aboody, 30, of Seattle and Ali Alazawi, 29, of Everett were sentenced yesterday for fraudulently obtaining commercial driver's licenses from a Pennsylvania transportation worker two years ago.
Al-Aboody and Alazawi, also known as Ali Algazawi, were also fined $350.
They were among 20 men of Middle Eastern origin arrested in late September on charges of obtaining a commercial driver's license from PennDOT license examiner Robert A. Ferrari Sr., 57, of Turtle Creek.
Ferrari pleaded guilty to selling the licenses to people who didn't take proper tests between July 1999 and March 2000. Ferrari was fired in April 2000, and the licenses have long since been canceled and surrendered.
Investigators began looking into fraudulent licenses out of the Pittsburgh driver's facility in March 2000.
Federal authorities moved quickly after the Sept. 11 attacks to arrest the 20 men, 18 of whom got commercial licenses with hazardous-materials endorsements.
None of the men charged in the scam has been linked to terrorist groups.

now a days, those areas are a bit tighter than not so tight... this was in my college days...
To: Darlin'
Call your neighbors for a "freezer" party and cook everything tomorrow. Except the ice cream - go eat that now.
To: Darlin'
that's gonna put a damper on sales of those mosquito magnets if fridges are gonna go down because of them
To: ValerieUSA
Aboody? With a name like that, that man should be scared to death of prison!
