re: stock market meltdown. I cashed in my mutual funds and a stock holding a couple of weeks ago to fund the downpayment on our new house. I'm glad I didn't wait. I was starting to beat myself up for not taking the money out a couple of years ago, but then, my crystal ball is fogged up.

Have fun Mo and girls... my kids loved swimming in the little motel pools on the trip, but rarely want to swim at any of the 3 big pools at the YMCA.

Taliban Johnny is mighty lucky.

Taliban Johnney will be lucky to survive a year in prison. The Muslims will hate him for being white, and everyone else will hate him for being Muslim. He will be an easy way to get famous for every man in the prison.

Keep us posted on the new digs - that view out the back is to die for. You made an excellent decision with the market.

Right now, by paying off existing real estate notes, we're earning 8-9%, which I don't think I could do with certainty anywhere else.

A profitable Monday to one and all - happy cow eating day indeed. ;-)

they will probably have to keep Jihad Johnny isolated from the general prison population. Otherwise, he won't last long, as you said.

The disheartenening thing is all the talk I'm hearing about a "real estate bubble". Yikes. Did we just buy into a "bubble"? The SF Bay Area has remained a hot real estate market, there isn't much inventory for sale, and we didn't look at many houses because there weren't that many to look at.

I don't understand these whining liberal American women speaking up on behalf of Jihad Johnny -- a member of the woman-hating oppressive Taliban. These hypocrites ought to wear burkas whenever they speak of his innocence.... (they probably ought to wear burkas anyway just for aesthetic reasons)

I am speculating that as the stock market seeks realistic levels based on companies' true worth, the conservative principle will begin to apply across the board. The liberal policies and overpriced tech sector that led to the boom in housing values in your area will lose their power and reality will hit that market, too, eventually.

Every time the news plays that footage of Jihad Johnny and his tiny hairy companion after arrest, the movie "Planet of the Apes" comes to mind.

That may not be entirely the case in areas like San Francisco and the surround Bay Area. San Francisco has had traditionally high housing prices due to restricted supply. There is a continuing housing shortage in the surrounding area, and unless the economy collapses and people move out of here, there will be more people looking for houses than there are houses available. The local govenments have placed unbelievable roadblocks in the way of builders, and then have established "growth limits" which further prevents building. People are moving further and further out to be able to afford housing, then drive to their jobs, causing liberal whining about "sprawl" and "congested highways". Doh.

I don't think so. When developers in your area start offering 5% down or 0% down mortgages on new homes, then you can be pretty sure of losing everything when the bubble pops. If you are in an established neighborhood where people have substantial investment in their homes, the value might sag a little for a year or two, but it will soon come back.

Yep, I remember reading about some prisoners, in California I think it was, who sent a donation to the Red Cross after 9-11. The warden said, they're prisoners yes, but they're patriots, too.
