"Alabama funerals"

I'd be careful of those Alabama funerals, Val. You might find yourself toted away by a big, goofy looking guy named bubba that thinks you're just the cat's pajamas.

"Nice links to the Alferd Packer story...."

There are some bizarre stories in Colorado's history. some interesting ghost stories too, besides the ones surrounding Packer.

..."If the Republican party had one-tenth the gumption that I see here in this forum, then we would be repeating their outrageous quotes at every turn.

Their OWN words can damn them far more effectively than ANYTHING we could say about them, but we are just AFRAID to fight fire with fire.

Why are Republicans afraid to call socialist idiots, 'socialist idiots??'"....

Ratty, I honestly don't believe the Republicans WANT to be in charge/control/leaders. It isn't like they're just a bunch of uneducated idiots.

I can assure you I don't gain an ounce of comfort or respect from or to the GOP when they have leaders like Senator Larry Craig {I know--he's one of mine} stand up in front of a public forum in front of a very conservative audience of constituents, and when asked about public lands policy, begins pacing back and forth in front of the audience wringing his hands and lamenting "the King's lands"! And he was referring to 'our alleged public lands' as King William's lands.

Real confidence builder that was. Especially after hearing him in Senate hearings berate Chief Dombeck and one of his minions from the Forest Service over the vast amount of lands they COULD NOT account for--hundreds of thousands of acres! Hell, he's there in Washington, D.C., with a paid staff, at least one of which is the person he looks to for expertise on forestry issues....and he can't come up with a solution, or possible solution....and he's in the Republican Senate leadership--I believe on policy.

I would presume that part of that party's problem is they have the abused wife syndrome OR the more probable problem is that we have a one party system monster with two heads.....while occasionally they take turns eating, they are still feeding the monster's body...and it doesn't bode well for the country.

BTW, you're correct, as is .38sw about the matter of private property.

Thank you for your welcome.

Yes, the visit from CG and her hubby was a surprise to say the least, but a very enjoyable surprise. We saw a few of the sights near by, but they will have to return to see everything else! which will take at least two weeks if not more. LOL

I think Glamis Castle and St. Andrews were the best trips we made.

The best defense of private property I've read is "The Joy of Freedom" by David Henderson (ISBN 0-13-062112-9). Well worth getting...

..."The Judiciary, the education system, the media, and now the fish, game, and wildlife departments have all been infiltrated by leftists who are working feverishly from within, to bring about the socialist revolution without firing a shot"...

Back in '89, while I still lived in Montana, I met up with one of the now county officials here in Idaho. I published a monthly newsletter to livestock and fiber producers/users. And often I would bring up something of note regarding endangered species, as it impacted our industries, etc.

Not long after I became acquainted with her, she told me of a public meeting she had attended here where there was a female forest service gal present. During this meeting, this woman suggested it was about time the United States quit producing its own foodstuffs and imported our needs; that there could be better use of the land.

When was NAFTA passed? How was Florida's crops affected? What about Southern Cal....or any other number of farm producting states.

When was GATT passed? How much New Zealand frozen lamb are we now importing....how many producers went out because of the elimination of the incentive program {which never cost the taxpayer a cent and in reality made a lot of money for the general fund of the fedgov]?

Oh yes.....at that town hall meeting that Senator Craig had....recall he is in leadership.....he had the guts to say they hadn't read all of its ramifications when they voted on it, but that at the end of 5 years parts could be renegotiated.

It was either NAFTA or GATT where some organization issued a challenge to donate a sizeable chunk of change to a Senator's favorite charity--the only condition being that they actually read the treaty/agreement/bill/whatever, and answer I believe 5 questions.

There was only one (1) senator who took them up and actually read it; answered the questions; and absolutely refused to vote for it. That was Senator Hank Brown of Colorado......so what about all those other long-term slugs who live at the trough but can't be bothered to read the crap they pass and force all of us to live with?

Of course, it was a huge paper pile so they couldn't be bothered to read it---surely everyone has heard the old saying that 'the devil is in the details'!! Or the legalistic phrase "ignorance of the law is no excuse"

..."Even private forest lands in California have problems because the state board of forestry has a lot of control over what is done on private lands. Even so, a side-by-side comparison of privately managed forest lands next to Forest Service lands is pretty revealing. The trees are thinned, the debris is cleaned up and the weeds are controlled. Wow. What a concept"....

You bring up an excellent comparison, Cheri. And it applies to grazing lands, too.

I can't recall the time frame--I would say early 1990s....a magazine put out with a title something like Stewards of the Range had an article with numerous pictures in it which was reporting on a large ranch in, I believe, New Mexico, which was being run by The Nature Conservancy....no domestic grazing.

Guess what...a picture showing side by side across the fence from each other grazing areas....Nature Conservancy's looked sparse and sickly whereas the privately owned/managed grazing area was plentiful and healthy looking.

I can't rememeber the exact details in the story, but the reporter showed the managing person or the one in charge at the NC managed ranch and he was shocked with the evidence. It seems like he was going to either approach NC directors to get a change in their operation or he had indicated he was quitting them because they had been exposed. As I recall, the man seemed like a reasonable person and further, it seems like he had some scientific background. Wish I had kept a lot of those old magazines even though I got out of the business.

The environuts will tell you grazing is bad, yada yada yada....and I will agree with them if it is allowed to be eaten to the ground it is an unhealthy bad management practice. But livestock grazing is akin to mowing your front lawn....does your front yard look sickly and sparse or unproductive or in such a condition that it couldn't sustain an assault by insects or some diseases?

Who could possibly truthfully believe that private stewardship is worse than public institutions that don't have a vested interest, who go thru the motions, who can't or won't fire slackards, who can't even tell you how they acquired a piece of land or got rid of a piece of land or if they even acquired it lawfully, and heaven forbid, an agency that has such incompetents that they can't even get away with salting 'evidence'?

The insanity is beyond belief....
