Hi, Val,
Not usually on this early. But got up to get a drink and discovered my computer did not shut all the way down last night..got to windows shuting down and stopped there! Got to find out how to fix that.not good for the monitor to stay on like that...but since I am not on all that much at one time, it possibly wont hurt too much this once...
While we were away, we heard little news of the world except for the World Cup. Brit flags all over the place. Well both the Americans and the Brits are out of it now...
Been having a time getting caught up on the threads..see my pal SLass is posting now pretty well. She really is a sweet person and her kids are wonderful..really lots of fun. But she has to get up early to keep up with em!LOL
One thing that is amazing to me in the UK is how much US TV they get..CNN, FOX and nearly all the tv programs like ER and West Wing and then some of the dorky sitcoms.
Yesterday on I think MSMBC a question was posed as to why our kids are doing so poorly on tests at school and the one in question was about geography. Seems obvious to me... the schools are now so intent on teaching alternative lifestyles and homosexuality and all this other crap that there is not enough time to teach the stuff the kids need to know to compete in the world today....
Got to let Yummie in the house..it was let him out or he would piddle on something. he hates the catbox..he got the bathroom mats while we were away. uuuummmmmmmmmm :(

Observer UK - Scandal sucks in the Queen of Clean The Congressional Energy and Commerce sub-committee questioned Waksal on Thursday.
It wants to know whether deficiencies in Waksal's drug were known to his company and the major investor in the rights to Erbitux (and in ImClone), the Bristol Myers drug giant.
A staffer on the committee told The Observer that 'untoward connections' between ImClone and the Food and Drug Administration, which licenses medicines, were also being investigated.
'Would it be fair to say,' asked committee member Jim Greenwood, 'that your strategy at ImClone was to put personal profiteering ahead of patients?'
I learned a few years ago that the FDA is NOT a consumer protection agency or advocate for patients who have been harmed by "legal" drugs. It is sloppily run and has no accountability, but it does have plenty of power and room for corruption.
The Waksal insider trade deals started inside the FDA when somehow the information was prematurely released to him that his company's wonderdrug was not going to receive approval the following day.

Yoda woke me up early wanting inside, and I discovered that the sewage system backed up and soaked the carpets last night while the dishwasher was running - it made the toilets overflow. My bedroom carpet near the bathroom door is a squishy mess, as is the hallway carpet outside the main bathroom. We had this problem twice when we first moved in before the roto rooter guy got the roots cleaned out of the pipes outside - now he has to come back.

From the Observer's report:
As for Waksal, the arrest marks a stunning downfall for a Holocaust survivor's son who had only weeks ago been put under board pressure to quit his position. He had been the toast of the biotech community, dating Stewart's daughter Alexis - less than half his age - and hiring the Doobie Brothers to play at a glittering gathering of cancer specialists in 2001.
He threw a sparkling Christmas party last year, while the alleged share-dumping was in progress. Guest of honour: the soon-to-be Sir Mick Jagger.

hiring the Doobie Brothers to play at a glittering gathering of cancer specialists in 2001. The Doobie Brothers? .... The Doobie Brothers?
No wonder his company tanked. The man is a twit.
