JimRome was talking about some enterprising young ladies setting up tents on a Riverside, CA golf course and offering sex for a fee.
Is this a great country, or what?

Here's a guy with a great idea Modest Needs Org for helping folks who have sudden but pressing needs financially. I'm going to check it out. bbl

IN THE EARLY DAYS OF LEMHI COUNTY, from the June 13, 2002, issue of The Recorder Herald

50 Years Ago - 1952
* The Lemhi county sheriff's office was notified this morning that the Cadillac, belonging to Charles Herndon, prosecuting attorney, here, has been found near Hamilton, Montana. The car was stolen last night while Mrs. Herndon was visiting at the home of Mrs. William Cannon, Jr.
* Impressive Flag Day ceremonies will be held Saturday night at the Lemhi county fairgrounds here, it was announced this week by the Salmon Elks Lodge, sponsors of the program.
* FOR SALE--Two business lots 50 x 150 each, 3-room house, garage, wood shed, wood and coal, furniture. $500, cut price for cash.

60 Years Ago - 1942
Missing issue.

70 Years Ago - 1932
* According to a ruling of Attorney General Babcock last week, Salmon can't have a municipal band unless an election is held and the qualified voters of the city vote in favor of it.
* John Bay and his partner are building a skow at the Allin Lumber Yard, in which they will embark on the Salmon river the last of this week. It is not a large craft, 16 feet long, four feet wide and sideboards four feet high.
* The Challis airport, which is being improved under the auspices of the American Legion post of this place, is nearing completion and within the next few days the work of clearing the rocks away, and leveling the runways, will be finished.

80 Years Ago - 1922
* A motion to dismiss the action brought by the John Tormey heirs, involving the ownership fo the so-called Tormey mine, has been denied by the Supreme Court.
* Ferrill Terry had as a passenger over Leesburg way on the stage Tuesday morning County Commissioner Briney, who was looking after the good of roads and culverts in that particular portion of his baliwick.
* The grand ball by the G.A.R. is to take place as the regular Fourth of July event in Salmon, a cherished institution where nothing is allowed to interfere. And may it never die.

90 Years Ago - 1912
* Meade Neal of Carmen was in town Tuesday. He lost a $150 spring wagon, when the eighth grade graduates went down on the creek to hold a post mortem blowout. Carmen creek was also on a tear, and when the young folks tried to ford the stream to reach a desirable, and less and umbrageous camping place, the current carried the vehicle away, landing it bottom upwards and broken on the bank below. No lives were lost but the ice-cream and cake went as flotsam to feed the fish below. It was a close call, and congratulations to the survivors are in order.

100 Years Ago - 1902
* Missing issue.

110 Years Ago - 1892
* The Fourth of July programme will be printed in full next week.
* Mrs. Gayle has been very ill for the past week, and at this writing is no better.
* A valuable horse belonging to Chas. A. Martin was badly wounded by jumping on a snag while trying to swim the Lemhi River near the bridge.
* Joe Crockett wishes us to inform the public that if he can make up a party of twelve to fifteen persons to visit the National Park he will furnish conveyance and board for the round trip at $32.50. He will leave here August 18th and be gone about 21 days.

* * * * * * * * * *

I was sorry to see that two issues were missing--especially seeing that one was the era of the Big War--WWII; and, of course, the other one being of an old-time era gone by. Hopefully, missing issues will be few and far between.

For the uninformed, in the 50 Years Ago...about the stolen Cadillac....Hamilton, Montana, is roughly 100 miles away, over a pass with an elevation over 7,000 ft.; as I understand, Highway 93 north over this pass into Monday was a dirt road until about 1959. In any event, it was only within the last 5 years that this road has been graded out, widened, and made 'going over the pass' half-way easy. And believe me, it is PITCH BLACK--even with lights on your vehicle. And where down here on the flat we can be 'snowless', up on the pass they have been known to have snow on the 4th of July!! I've been in a near whiteout condition up there at night on the 3rd of April. So, the theft of this Caddy was quite a feat Would you not agree, Cuttnhorse?.

Salmon and environs certainly weren't adverse to having balls and other galas. I'm sure its safe to assume that they were nothing along the lines of something held in the Waldorf-Astoria, New York City....but nonetheless, the locals certainly enjoyed themselves.

And it's refreshing to know that the patriotic roots of the folks around here isn't some newly acquired characteristic, but something that has long been around. I appreciate this inasmuch as Idaho, all to often in the recent past, has had many outsidee attempts to be portrayed as 'patriot terrorists'. The rest of the country should be so lucky as to have the high degree of independent, free-thinking, patriotic citizens.

'IF' IN TODAY'S WORLD....

If you can start the day without caffeine,
If you can be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,
If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,

If you can eat the same food everyday and be grateful for it,
If you can understand when loved ones are too busy to give you time,
If you can overlook when people take things out on you,

If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,
If you can face the world without lies and deceit,
If you can conquer tension without medical help,

If you can relax without liquor,
If you can sleep soundly every night.......

THEN --- YOU ARE PROBABLY THE FAMILY DOG.

(or taking a shitload of mood-altering medications!!)

You forgot "ornery"!

And yes about Lost Trail to Hamilton...I do NOT like to make that drive at night...I call it the "Wildlife Obstacle Course".
I like the story about the buggy wreck on Carmen Creek. We rented a house on Carmen Creek when we first moved to the area.

One more...... POLITICS

A little boy goes to his dad and asks, "What is Politics?"

Dad says, "Well son, let me try to explain it this way:
I'm the head of the family, so call me The President.
Your mother is the administrator of the money, so we call her the Government.
We're here to take care of your needs, so we'll call you the People.
The nanny, we'll consider her the Working Class.
And your baby brother, we'll call him the Future.

Now think about that and see if it makes sense." So the little boy goes off to bed thinking about what Dad has said. Later that night, he hears his baby brother crying, so he gets up to check on him. He finds that the baby has severely soiled his diaper.

So the little boy goes to his parent's room and finds his mother sound asleep.
Not wanting to wake her, he goes to the nanny's room.
Finding the door locked, he peeks in the keyhole and sees his father in bed with the nanny.
He gives up and goes back to bed.

The next morning, the little boy say's to his father, "Dad, I think I understand the concept of politics now." The father says, "Good, son, tell me in your own words what you think politics is all about."

The little boy replies, "The President is screwing the Working Class while the Government is sound asleep. The People are being ignored and the Future is in Deep Shit."

Oh yes....'onery'....thanks for catching that....LOL!!!

Carmen Creek is a lovely area. When I was looking for a little place, my brother drove me way up the creek road. We stopped and visited for a few minutes with some fella that he knows up there.

The serenity and tranquility so reminded me of back home at the ranch in Montana...:(

The signature dish for breakfast is a delicious breakfast casserole
created with black forest ham, cheddar cheese, hash browns, and mild green chilies
served with fresh fruit. A breakfast Treat to Remember.

That's south of me a little ways.

My brother did some work there on stoves or fireplaces....I can't remember right now.

You just keep on a looking' loddy....we'd love to have ya come and reside up thisa way.

Bout the only 'words of wisdom' I'd pass along is that if you ever decided to relocate up this way, please leave your ideas of how things should work back there....at least until you become an old-timer. People here really don't mind newcomers--exceptin when they start trying to change the very things that caused them to want to move here. :)

At the bottom of the map is Mt. Borah....that's where they had a terrible earthquake some years back. It seems like the earth split several feet apart. There were buildings destroyed and people died....seems like school children were involved.

Maybe Cuttn can remember more of the story....I've not actually been to the epicenter site, though there is apparently a center or kiosk there.

Now look what you started. There was a 5.0 quake, 5 kilometers deep at Evansville, Indiana four hours ago.
That is part of the New Madrid fault system.

I didn't know Chile was such a trend-setter.
I got to tell you, I'm not a big fan of these things...I "exited" the office while the thing was really rocking and watched our radio antennae tower sway pretty good. The earth moved, (not in the Hemingway sense) for about 2-minutes.

The scarp of the Mt. Borah quake is still clearly visible from the highway to Mackay (pronounced Mackie...he was a Scott ya know). There is a little interpretive center near the turnoff to Mt. Borah, which describes all the neat stuff.

As I recall, two young children were killed in Mackay when a wall collapsed.
Thanks for the map and photo of the Graystone Inn...the folks who own it have really done a nice job of restoring it.
My place is between Salmon and Tendoy near the #6 that says "Sacajawea Sign". My little ranchito is about due east toward Montana on a dead-end road...the best kind.
