Just being a wiseacre. I type Ebonics every now an' then. :-)

Some good points, Tennessee, particularly that of anonymity.

Yeah, but I'd have to give the old geezer an F- in "people skills."

Yep, he sure had a nasty habit of peeing on the carpet.
At the same time, one could admire his resistance to "sensitivity" training and political correctness.

I still get a chuckle over one of the many times he was in the doghouse.
That was when he was permitted to post, but his screen name appeared without his treasured "+".
He musta begged for a couple months to get that back! Hehehehehehe!

I wonder what the ol' coot is up to?
If his health is holdin' up, this is the time of year that he heads back to Vermont.

The actual story as to the missing plus sign is somewhat more benign. Bert was on a short banning, as I recall, during one of the software updates, in fact it may have been one that required new cookies, but anyway, when Bert signed back on the software wouldn't give him his screen name with a plus sign. He lobbyed, whined and got good natured support for he, as a renowned crummudgen to get his plus sign reinstated. Finally, Jim or John got tired of the continuous harping and did a work-around to restore it to him. Probably took a dozen hours, but hey, these guys are pretty darn soft hearted because they know what the forum means to even some they tire of.

Bert was a good guy....just not a people person....LOL

Ahhh yes, I remember that now. Was about 2 or 3 years ago.

So where's A+Bert now? Hope he's good wherever he is, and that he'll revisit us again soon if at all possible :-)

I assume our thread-starter here, is just one of those who has had trouble adapting to the changes in the internet boards in general. When this forum started, it was during the anonymous bulletin board era, when the civility, punctuation, capitalization and all niceities of communication were dispensed with as too formal and timely for computer chat. Bluntness and easy flaming was the full texture and culture of such forums and newsgroups.

The visibility of FR, the acceptance of the internet board with an elaborate forum and a preserved nature, plus the liability for the Owner brought about a complete change in the manner of discourse. Some can't stand that change. They were too attached to the free-wheeling web style and, to them, this is so much watered down pablum.

Jim started his own board for his aversion to message content restrictions. For others, the Medium is the Message and they can't deal with the change.

Its a shame, because its obvious they value the interaction.

Do you agree that there are those like what I've described?

The best flame wars were in the DonMorgan/Navigator/Deb/OneWhoKnows/Mojo days...

You mean back when FR was about investigation, about being an alternative news source where you could find out things that government didn't want you to know - instead of regurgitating the mainstream news media and GOP press releases?

Yeah, those were better times....

Message from Jim Robinson

I've received quite a bit of email from banned posters in the last day or so, plus several anonymous complaints and remarks. Seems the bannees are taking great delight in their perceived belief that the current fundraiser is not doing so well. Well, we're not quite a full four days into the fundraiser and we're at 20% from credit card donations. Not bad. And, when you roll in the $21,000 in monthlies, plus the 8,000 to 9,000 that we usually receive in checks and through PayPal, we'll be over 60%. That's fantastic!

Also, receiving a lot of snickering remarks about the 84,000 FReeper number. Yes, that's the number of registrations we've had, but obviously we do not have 84,000 active FReepers (at least not registered active FReepers). The server stats show 65 to 75 thousand unique visits per day and I know that during big news events that number goes a lot higher, so I wouldn't doubt that we do approach 80,000 FReepers and LURKERS.

Also, receiving many nasty remarks about how can it cost $300,000 per year to run this website. Well, the short answer is, it doesn't. Our budget totals a little over $20,000 per month in regular recurring expenses. That includes 6,000 for management, 1,000 for admin, 3,000 for programming, 5,800 for bandwidth, 3,000 for legal and the remainder is for office expenses, travel, lodging and misc. Plus there's usually repairs, maintenance, improvements, projects, events, etc., that are budgeted and funds raised separately. Our bandwidth price this year is a couple thousand less than last year, but some of the other expenses are higher so I expect we'll probably need about the same amount overall.

Thanks for all your hard work and thanks to all who are helping you. You're doing a great job and a great service. And special thanks to all who are donating. Without your support there would be no Free Republic.

Regards,

Jim Robinson

"I did feel bad, though, when the moderator deleted my friend's pro-life photos."

Graphic photos of violence usually get deleted, though it would be nice to say that on the reply and submission pages.

I had a thread pulled for "advertising," because I reviewed and recommended watching the cost-only $3.50 Life Dynamics video here, concerning the biggest pro-life action in recent memory. I suppose you have to reply to yourself to mention the low cost, so that people won't mistake it for money grubbing. Pity.

Yes sir, no one could take the wind out of the sails of the elitists faster than old Bert.

The best flame wars were in the DonMorgan/ Navigator/Deb/OneWhoKnows/Mojo days.

Those posters (except for Don Morgan who was a racist) were fighting the kooks, radicals, conspirators, racists, fanatics, homophobes, and narrow-minded hypocrites that inhabited the forum to a much greater degree then than they now do.

I'm grateful to the mods for weeding out thousands of wackos.
