I'll start. If there are any freepers in the NYC area, I have about 8 yrs experience in the home video buisness, both in retail and distribution. This knowledge could be translated to the record industry, or publishing worlds or many other industries. I also worked in operations for a now defunct e-retail dot-com. I also have shipping and customer service experience.
My educationl backround is in marketing and advertising. I'm not asking for a huge salary. Approx.$30,000 $35,000/yr with basic benefits would be nice. If you think you can help me, let me know. I'll gladly send you my resume.

It would be extremely awesome if this actually worked for anyone here. We could even keep it as a regular feature to help each other out. I see it now - the FreeRepublic employment service. :)
Hope this helps someone, if not me. NYC area may be a lost cause for the near future. It's really bad out there.

Not a bad idea... a Free Republic Classifieds! - I hope you have been nice in FR lately... If I were in a hiring position, I would do a "Find In Forum" on you... a cheap background check!
Good luck in your job search... I have been through long dry spells too... I sure hope something comes along quick.

I hope you have been nice in FR lately.LOL! Well, I always try to be nice to people, if that's what ya mean, but this is one place where I will never be phoney, job or no job. I've been myself. I'll live with the consequences of that.:)

Wish you all the best!

Great thread and great idea!
I'll throw my oar in on behalf of my brother. He's looking for a position in Texas as a pilot/flight engineer trainer and curriculum developer, 747/767/L-1011 and other airframes, 10 years experience, UNIX/PC/software experience, the usual references. He also has management and flight engineer experience on P-3C Orion aircraft in the US Navy, 20 years worth there.
He claims that his idea of a great job at this point is one where he doesn't have to say "You want fries with that?" Somebody needs to hire the guy - it'll get his wife off my back! ;)

Yup. He's got his app in over there already. We're hopeful he'll hear something when JSF ramps up some more.

That's cool... I've been keeping half an eye on 'em myself-- so many engineering positions. I'm in the wrong damn field.

Same here. (But if they ever post a technical writer position though, watch out ...)

technical writer position
I did technical writing and editing for about 15 years in Tulsa and D-FW. It was definitely a cyclic environment.

My current stint (with a big electronics retailer based in Ft. Worth) is the longest I've had in the field to date - 10 years this August. It is definitely cyclical in nature.

I'll throw my oar in on behalf of my brother. He's looking for a position in Texas Excellent. What might be a great idea now is if you posted a link to this thread on the Texas state message board, so your post will come to the attention of Texas Freepers. I'll do the same for NY. Anyone else who posts here might want to do the same for their state.

The dark ages are over ALL the jobs are on the internet. I am being layed off Thursday (first time for me---how much IS unemployment - I heard $300 a week?) -- so you better get to it. It's time consuming and it's work...but you are going to be unemployed until you start clicking.
How can you live on such little money?? I can't wait...I need to work REAL SOON.

The dark ages are over ALL the jobs are on the internet.Do you mean the internet is the best way to find a job? If you do, I have to laugh. Every resume I sent out through Hotjobs, Monster, Headhunter etc... went into a bottemless pit. This was proven to me during one of my recent temp jobs. I was working in a HR dept. doing some "filing". What I was filing were the resumes they received from just 1 Hotjobs posting. There were thousands and thousands of them. I was told to "file" them all in a giant cardboard box and stuf them in a giant closet. I don't know if the actual job that solicited those resumes was ever even filled.

I posted my resume on Hotjobs YESTERDAY....today I got a call from an agency who had a job for me ....only problem was it was a little to far to travel for me.
SO...how much is unemployement? I'd like to know since I will be joining the list for the first time in my life.
I went to an open house the other day....sure I'd get one of the 25 positions. Well...there were over 100 people there......when I got there their list of qualifications for the little salary made me laugh out loud. I don't expect to get called. So it is gonna be tough.....I will have to find an under the table job somewhere.....maybe picking oranges.

Depends on the state, and how much you were earning. In NY, maximum in $450/week before witholdings.
